after three years of owning this tired old rig, this morning i boot up and a message appears that win98se can't find my mouse. so hey, no prob, reseat the connectors and reboot. no joy. ok, plug in another mouse, nothing doing. now i'm getting a little concerned. out comes all the adapters and i tried both mice in ps2,serial and usb ports. nothing doing.. ran the mice on my test rig and both are fine. i now try my cordless. i load up the proggy, reboot and plug in @ the usb port. no message that it found my cordless? i'm stuck... what next peeps? is there a way to get into device mgr to see what's up there w/out a mouse? my bios makes no mention that i can find about the mouse specifically. i do have com1 and 2 enabled. is that a prob? help...sos...sos...sos

sys spec: 200mmxtx430chipset, supermicro mobo, 128mb pc100 dimm, 27gig maxtor ata66 7200, sb awe64gold, stb 4400 graphics, scsi plexmax40, sony8/4/32 cd/rw, and a damaged logitech mouse swinging in a tree outside my broken window.)

Try reboting in safe mode to see if you have a mouse then. Keep pressing F8 during boot..

Got a boot disk? You could try adding the mouse driver to the config.sys on a boot disk and see if it works in dos mode (using a mouse test program, for example). Also, if your config or autoexec loads a mouse driver while booting to windows, it could cause some problems.
Sure U checked all the BIOS options?

I've ben having this same problem intermitently for months. It's driving me crazy. Usually everything's fine, but every once in awhile, no mouse. I've also tied PS2 and COM port. I keep re-booting and it eventually finds the mouse, don't know why. If you resolve this, please post your results.

I believe that the PS/2 port wants IRQ 12 by default. I have seen cases where another device (it's usually this ASPI something-or-other - I'm sorry I can't remember more detail) will sometimes grab this IRQ and screw your mouse, even when you try to go Serial afterwards. The best fix is to get a PS/2->USB adapter if you've got USB on your mobo, which it looks like you should. Otherwise, go into the BIOS and turn off PnP OS (it allows windows to re-map IRQ settings and Windows doesn't always get 'em right); insure that PS/2 mouse-seek is enabled and that nothing else is taking IRQ 12. I hope this helps!

Thanks. Is it as smiple as just getting a PS2/USB adapter? Do I have to install any additional drivers to get the computer to see the mouse on the USB port? ( I believe I've already got the mobo set to emable USB)

Thanks, again

Sometimes in dry weather I go to pick up my mouse when the computer is running, I feel a slight static electricity shock, and the mouse disappears. I have to power down the machine completely in order to get the mouse to work again.

<< , I feel a slight static electricity shock, and the mouse disappears. >>

Excuse me for pointing this out, but plastic doesn't conduct electricity, so there is no way it would shock you. Also, depending on what region of the country you live in, higher humidity can make static even higher. Why do you think they have things in UPS truck's to remove humidity? Static! Ever touched the UPS man and gotten shocked? I have, a few million times.

Yup. If you have a mainstream mouse, Windows'll pick it up as soon as you plug it in.
