I have a mandatory unpaid social function at work

For some reason, the powers that be decided that we should have a BBQ on Friday at 3pm. It's unpaid, which I guess is pretty normal.

The thing is, the night crew comes in at 3:15. So we all have to come in at 7am that day, work until 3, then be at the BBQ until 8.

I asked them how productive we'd all be on 2 hours of sleep at 7am, and why the scheduled a BBQ during work hours. They didn't really answer. So now we're all staying late every day so that we can leave at 9pm on Thursday.

Crazy managers...
 
Well, if it makes you feel any better I had to be at at 3am this morning so I could be at work by 5. I leave for work in 15 minutes.

That does suck.

I'm not mad about having to be there. Heck, I really like my job. I just don't understand their logic.
 
I wouldn't go.

even with mandatory staff meetings, my managers usually give some leway to the overnight guys, who are usually sleeping when the staff meeting is supposed to start.

as an overnight guy, my best way of explaining it to 9-5'ers is to reverse am and pm. for me, that 2 pm staff meeting is the equivilant of 2 am for you.

I'm on the committee that plans events for our company. If you're scheduled to work during the event, you get paid. If not, you don't. But you don't have to go either.

We're finishing up the planning for our annual "Booze Cruise". We lease a large boat (enough to hold 500 people), have dinner and lots of alcohol and prizes.

In September we'll be going to an Angels vs Rangers game to meet the Rangers (our company bought the naming rights to their stadium) and get autographs and such.

In Novermber we'll be having a Casino night. More booze and prizes.


None of these are required, but out of 650 eligible IT staff, around 500 show up to these events. Pretty good turnout. We have fun every time too. 😀

I thought you lived in the no-traffic infested part of the state? Those are NOVA like hours.🙁
 
I'd just blow it off. I go to work to do my job and get paid. Not socialize and stay late every evening to bond with 50 year old men.
 
There'd better be some great BBQ for your mgmt. folks to be changing hours and telling people where to be(without paying them, no less). For a morale event, it certainly seems to achieve the exact opposite.

They just schedule retarded meetings, talk about problems they don't understand, offer solutions that aren't viable or relevant and ultimately acomplish nothing.

Exactly. I'm not being paid = It isn't mandatory.

Of course that would all depend on the job and if i plan on making it my career and/or staying there for a long time.

There is no traffic until I get to Chesterfield. But I live 50 miles from where I work.
 
If you pay exceeds minimum wage to the point where the hours at the company function would not cause you to be paid at less than minimum wage for that pay period (even assuming overtime), then yes they can legally make attendance to the function mandatory.
