I have a great idea for a fighting game.

I really think the following idea is a great idea for a two person fighter game, and the idea came from a whole bunch of the threads over in ATOT.

The basic premise of the game is simple, and has been done hundreds of times: a two person fighter ala Mortal Kombat (but with 3d graphics, of course).

Now for the nuts and bolts:
1. It should have the ability for net play (goes without saying)
2. It should have an economic system similar to the old "One Must Fall" game. i.e. win a fight, get a cash reward that can be spent on upgrades to improve your fighter (or in the case that you lose, use your bank account to fix yourself).

Now for the part that makes this game unique:
Allow users to create their fighters from scratch, or download fighters from web archives - even purchase fighters from the web. I'm thinking specifically about the type of system that "The Sims" has, where you create a graphical model, customize it with skins and whatnot, and then distribute a set of "attribute points" however you like (i.e. strength, armor, etc.)

This would allow people to create fighters that look like themselves, famous folks, or even off the wall "objects" like a Coke can.

In other words, for the first time in the history of video gaming, we could finally answer such vastly important questions as "Bruce Lee vs. Coke" or "The Hulk vs. Popeye", or even Jennifer Anniston vs. Snoop Dog.

What do you think???

I don't think it's possible... in fighting games, we're talking about things that happens in less than a second, such as a combo move, or a punch that is blocked instantly right after it. Your average ping rate would have problems with it. It's one thing to run around with a gun and shooting another player, and another to do hand-to-hand combat with them and getting 5 actions done within a second.

What you propose is unbalanced: gameplay vs customization.

Like many mentioned, the length of a fighting game "round" is very short. It just does not seem like vast customizations would fit in well with such time sensitive gameplay.

At first I thought this was dumb but the parallel to The Sims is kind of intriguing. It has to be a little more than just "attribute points and skins" but you could design a sort of evolutionary fighting character through somewhat non-deterministic methods. Make general rules for fighting but allow room for growth in ways that the game designers never planned for. "Fighting moves" that were never programmed into the game could be generated by the random sequences of attributes that you assign your character. You'd have to figure out what your body's abilities are and those might not work the same anymore each time you change attributes. Granted, letting something unpredictable like that out might turn the game into an incredibly boring flop but it might flourish.

To Hardcore: I'm not a game designer but I don't think this model would be a whole lot harder than fps games. Strafing many bullets per second at someone who is running in a zigzag pattern requires split second precision to produce the correct result. Although I guess that doesn't require the same human reaction, it's harder to dodge a bullet than a fist. Maybe it could start with a slower, more articulated fighting mode. Your bodies move slower on the screen but you have to provide more control to get the body to do exactly what you want. That might also produce more interesting fighting because you have a wider range of movements instead of the exact same punch every time you hit a certain key.

Sorry, but I have enough of my own ideas that are both more original and cooler (IMO) than this ... plus, I won't have to pay you royalties after I write the code. :)

why 3d? the most popular fighting game for instance - guilty gear series - isnt 3d at all.

Now for the nuts and bolts:

2. It should have an economic system similar to the old "One Must Fall" game. i.e. win a fight, get a cash reward that can be spent on upgrades to improve your fighter (or in the case that you lose, use your bank account to fix yourself).

there already is a huge community called diabloii. if you havnt noticed, most people still play are in it for the dueling part, not pvm; hell, i grew old of it my second day and i been playing since 2000 fall (1.04). i will admit LoD dueling is teh suck and thats why i wouldnt touch it, and they could enforce stricter rules (too many punks with absolute lack of self-respect) like no pots, no town guarding, no NKing, stuff like that. this is also a result of allowing too much relative freedom which is likely be the outcome of your suggestion, only worse in your case.

Allow users to create their fighters from scratch, or download fighters from web archives - even purchase fighters from the web. no matter how flexible you try to be, you have to settle on something, and chances are not everyone would like that. FYI, there are already tons of online RPGs that allow you to customize your character, to the point i dont think it would be technologically feasible to go further.

gamemakers are struggling to balance the game even with limited number of characters and releasing bug fixes and patches all the time. what you are suggesting sounds like a nightemare infested with infinite possibilities for exploits, hacks and etc.

i am not trying to rip on your thread, just saying there have been similar attempts and the uniquenesses you trying to bring are either already tried to a certain point or simply not attainable at the point.

EDIT : to sum it up, what you are describing sounds too humongous and too robust to implement. if you just want bruce lee vs coke, you should make a simple game that focuses the certain style you like. there are TONS of doujin games that cater a certain crowd, some of them more popular and others just played by those who like the subject matter.
