First time I used my Garmin, it took me through a wonderful little neighborhood in East St. Louis.

It wasn't faster then just jumping on the highway, a way I knew how to get there, in fact it was much much slower. Yes I arrived at my destination alive, but I may not have.

Now that I don't trust my Garmin, how does it gain my respect back?

Are you Michael from The Office? Just because the little gps says "turn right at the next crack house" doesn't mean you have to.

Did you set it to shortest distance or fastest route in the navigation options?

The making of an epic lawsuit. GPS company accused of redlining neighborhoods! Ghetto residents can't find way home! "My streets simple don't exist in Garminland" says plaintiff.

I frequently ignore my NAV... what it says is merely a suggestion. ;) I use it mostly for the real-time-traffic-info. One time I did follow the alternate route (because RTTI saw multiple congestion areas) and that time it saved me big. I guess I should listen to it more, but I can't trust these things much as they often tell you to get off the highway and get right back on.

Ahhh, East St. Louis, I remember it well. Sounds like it hasn't changed much.

I'm not sure about no-go, but Garmins - you can set shortest distance, shortest time. You can also just keep driving and it'll automatically recalculate your route.
