I have a genuine mystery on my hands....

Heres the short of it. Recently upgraded to a conroe about a month ago, fresh OS install. The only game I have installed is HL2 and some other steam games. I play mostly Day of Defeat and have been playing it for the last month with no problem. All of a sudden I am getting crappy framerates. It will be smooth for a second then real jumpy. The only thing I did in the last week was replace the corsair ram with some Kingston (same speed/voltage) to bring the system up to 2 gigs. I have since put the old ram back. Its in dual channel now, but also tried just using 1 stick. Same thing.

I also thought is was my DSL connection. But it does it in offline mode when playing half-life lost coast.

Here are my system specs:

E6300
Intel DP965LT motherboard
Corsair 2 X 512 PC4200 value RAM
Seagate barracuda 120 gig SATA
NEC dvdrw + another DVD rom
onboard audio/lan

Could the video card be going bad? When I run the stress test within half -life lost coast... it runs smooth.

Should I clear the CMOS? Maybe changing the ram cause something in the BIOS to not automatically reconfigure.

I am also going to install the latest drivers when I get home... but don't see how that is an issue since the current ones were doing fine for 3+ weeks.

EDIT: another piece of the puzzle... could a bad DVDrw on the IDE channel be causing this? My NEC loses communication during a burn. I will also disconnect it and boot up see what happens.

I don't have any experience (yet) with a core duo. However, this sounds like a power or ram issue to me. You've left some important information out though ... You failed to mention your PSU (brand, model, and amp ratings on each of the rails) and your graphics card. Even though a C2D is considered a low wattage chip, your PSU might not be up to the task ... especially if you're running a high end graphics card. Also keep in mind that while your new ram may run at the same speed and voltage, it is using more power than your 512 mb crucials did.

Check to see if there is documented memory issues with that board and Kingston chips. (I know, Kingston has a good rep for compatibility ... but it never hurts to be sure.) If thats all it is, a bios update would probably take care of that. Otherwise, it may be memtest time.

Keep us posted ...

P.S. It wouldn't hurt to clear cmos and reset your ram, voltage if necessary, and the other options you may have chosen in your bios.

Forgot... I have an Nvidia 7800GTOC and an Enermax 420watt noisetaker II. it as I said it awesome until I think about the same time I switched the RAM. I am back to the original ram, its still slow, so I will clear the CMOS and see how that goes.

It was the damn anti-virus! I disabled it and it ran like a champ again. The onyl thing I can guess is the engine got updated because it ran flawless before. oh well.

Its hard to say if this all was caused by your AV engine ... but I wouldn't dismiss the possibilities either.

Anyway, its good to hear things are back to "normal," however, your PSU is a bit on the light side for the rig you built. Its saving grace is its of good quality to start with. (Your graphics card recommends a minimum of a 450 watt supply.) You may run into power related issues if you begin to add drives or other components. I think as a precaution, I'd be looking to upgrade to a beefier PSU once the funds are available.

Glad to hear things are running good now though. Peace and enjoy your new rig.

Which antivirus? I had been noticing that Norton has gotten rather bloated lately and switched over to Kaspersky. Since then my rig has been much happier. It is much more noticable on older computers.

Good luck, glad you found the problem!
