How do I not get my computer infected? I have Kaspersky Antivirus 7.0 on my computer. Will my computer be infected as soon as I plug the disk in? I think it's a worm.

I don't think anyone could say for certain if it would be infected as soon as you put the disk in. The infection had to get there in the first place though, you could incidentally copy over a file that has been infected to begin with.

Whatever you do make sure you have backed up your system first, if you have a test machine try it on that first.

You know it's a worm because....?

You might also want to disable AutoPlay, create a non-Admin user account to use for rescuing stuff (and consider using one full-time for obvious reasons), and if your Windows version allows Software Restriction Policy, you can add that too.

Thanks Oakenfold, mechBgon.

I have a question for you mech: I have Windows XP Pro w/SP2 and cannot see Autoplay Policies folder under Windows Components. I am logged in as an administrator. Any ideas? Thank you.

Edit:

Ok, I turned Autoplay off using TweakUI but its still confusing why I am not able to see it under Group Policy editor.

Turkish you've got me stumped, I thought I'd look through policy settings on my XP Pro SP2 Rig and I cannot find the setting to disable it either. I'm sure Mech will know. ;)

Good to know that I am not using a version of Windows that is XP Pro by the label only.

I am in Istanbul, Turkey, so I know it's pretty early in the morning back in the U.S. right now. I guess we'll have to wait for Mech to wake up :)

Are you definitely looking in the User Configuration branch, rather than Computer Configuration?

As an alternative, what about booting off a live Linux CD, like Ubuntu?
You could then pull the files off, and scan them with an online scanner like www.virustotal.com before saving them.

Yes, absolutely sure... I was able to turn autoplay off by utilizing that sweet app called TweakUI but just so you know, not all XP Pro versions may have autoplay there :)

Here is my winver screenshot
And here you can see my gpedit screenshot
