I have a Discover CC and just Discovered the Bullshit

I got the Discover Miles thinking every mile works like a physical mile. I got some 5500 miles saved up from purchases. I called customer service for some reason and was asking how the mileage is redeamed. You get a $50.00 credit for every 5,000 miles you saved up. Is this some bullshit. WTF do you do with $50.00.....

Kind of misleading if you ask me.

I'm 25 yo. The only CC I've ever head was my BOA CC which I've had since I was like 18. I decided to start getting involved in these reward cards maybe it might benefit me. But I though every physical mile you earn is a physical mile on the map WTF.

Or maybe I'm wrong is $50.00 usually = 5K miles (I don't think so)

You have to read all the fine print whenever you get a credit card, checking account, loan, anything. No worries, since your incorrect assumption didn't really hurt you.

Look at every frequent flyer or credit card miles plan out there... not a single one gives you an actual flight mile for a "credit card mile".

I was thinking that you discovered that getting the card was useless cause no one accepts it anywhere. Who knew?

Fry: Do you take Visa?
Clerk: Visa has not existed in 300 years.
Fry: American Express?
Clerk: 600 years.
Fry: Discover Card?
Clerk: I'm sorry, we don't take Discover.

That would literally equate to buy one get one free on all flights you will ever take or get round trip tickets for half price forever... Seriously now... did you think you would get benefits like those on your CC?

If the deal seems too ridiculously good to be true, it probably is. Miles programs usually aren't any good unless you already are a frequent flier - and even then, it's a hard justification.

at least on my card, theyre called points. i have about 25,000 points right now that i can redeem to fly across the country. theres only a small redemption fee when i redeem the points.

At least it's not as bad as the "points" system that some credit card and frequent traveler programs use!

I love getting statements in the mail saying "You have 22,000 points and have been promoted to Silver status!" only to find out that each "point" is worth about a third of a cent and I still don't have enough available to even quality for a free hotel stay yet 🙁

He probably never sat down and worked out the math to see why it would be impossible for anyone to make that kind of offer. It would indeed be very close to buy one get one free, and that's just if you only used the card to buy airline tickets. For people who do only moderately serious spending on a credit card every month, they could fly to Europe free a couple times a year. No company could afford to give that away.

all the flyer programs use 1 mile = $0.01 AFAIK
last time i was active in delta's program, you could get a free US flight (regardless of the price) for redeeming 25,000 miles

except southwest, i think they don't go by miles, it is something like fly 8 flights and get one free

Even though you don't think so, you're wrong. 2,500 points on my Amazon Visa is... $25.00. Pretty much every points system is 1%. Some, like my gas card, are 5% on specific purchases (in that case, Shell gasoline, other purchases are a 1% credit), but that's rarer. There's no a card on earth that will give you 100% though. Sheesh.

Other than Sams Club or Sears, I don't see any where around here that will take Discover.

<<---Visa and MasterCard...and used to have Amex

Seems like you're incapable of reading the instructions/fine print when you signed up. Bullsh!t? No, just your own inability to read.
