I have a Dell motherboard (*gags*), and I'm trying to find out what CPU's I can use in it.

Dell won't help me because they don't even sell standalone CPU's, and I don't have a contract with them.

I have a P4 ("C" - I think), 3.0 Ghz, 800 MHz FSB.

Just based on that incredibly vague info, is anyone here able to tell me what the best/fastest CPU is that will fit/work in this Dell proprietary motherboard?

Thanks much, I'm having a hard time figuring out the answer to this.

Ok, I'll get some more info to you when I get home tonight. Can you give me specifics that you'll need? The MB doesn't even have a name or a model number I don't think. I can get you the chipset (I don't remember it). But what else would be helpful? Thanks!

Ok, I just found out that the chipset is Intel 875p. And my current CPU has Hyper Threading, if that means anything at all to this thread.

It's not as simple as being able to just toss any 'ol P4 into there, is it?

A P4 "C" 3.0 GHz is a Northwood 800 MHz FSB CPU Socket 478. That is a pretty decent CPU. You could go to a 3.4C (expensive) or a 3.2/3.4EE (insanely expensive). Not sure if your mobo would support a "E" Prescott CPU.

Thanks, oldfart (heh). If I take my computer to a computer specialty store, would they be able to easily tell me what I can upgrade to just by getting their hands on it? I'm having a frustrating time figuring out my potential upgrades here online.

Thanks for the links.

And I know that my CPU is very adequate. It's just that's its now over a year old, and I will want to upgrade in about a year, I think. So I just wanted to know the facts so that I could be ready when it was time.

Don't waste your money on a cpu upgrade. You'd be better off adding memory, or a faster video card.

Gah! :) I'm not planning on upping my CPU any time soon. This was just an information-gathering thread. So that when I do upgrade in over a year from now, I'll know what kind of CPU I can throw in there.

A new video card is my next purchase. I can't figure out what to get... but that's another story.
