Well darn it, I am working half day today and then heading straight to Santa Cruz for the weekend, so I went to check my queue and see that I have a cruncher down. Called to have the wife reboot the computer and she says that the hd is making a loud clicking noise! DOH! That system was my little web server and my pc anywhere connection. Plus it turned out 7 wu's a day. Wont be able to get to it until Sunday night AND I dont think I have a HD for it. DASM!

Love that movie and bummer you had to google! :) So I googled myself to get you some more great quotes to help yo uall out.

Head! Paper! Now!
Move that melon of yours and get the paper if you can!
Haulin' that gargantuan cranium about!
I'm not kidding, that boy's head's like Sputnik!
Spherical, but quick pointy in parts.
Well, that was off sides, wasn't it?
He'll be crying himself to sleep tonight on his *huge* pillow!

William! Move your head!
Look at the size of that boy's head!
I'm not kidding, that's like an orange on a toothpick!
Well, that's a huge noggin!
That's a virtual planetoid! Has its own weather system!
Head! Move!

Mae! Shut it!

Oh, I hated the colonel, with his *wee
beady* eyes, and that smart look on his face...Oh, you're going to
buy my chicken! Ooooh!

I hate dead crunchers, too. :frown: :(

Good luck getting it fixed, and soon (hopefully).

Whenever one dies, however, it gives me a good excuse to upgrade (I have only two systems and need both of them for other non-crunching purposes as well), so it's not all bad. ;)

I turned one of my machines off because of a really nasty thunderstorm last night (I get paranoid :p), and forgot to power it up this morning :(

MoFunk, I can feel your pain! I have two down according to SetiQueue. One is in my apartment and I can get it going tonight. The other is at home and I will not be back for a week. The one at home is not in a case and I had a REAL HARD time getting my wife to restart it with a ballpoint pen (metal tip) the last time it was down. My wife is also out of town until Sunday, so I can't even ask her to do it. Each one does 7 WU per day! :(

Got one of mine back up and running. It was sitting at 0% complete and SetiSpy was idle. Yesterday I cranked the Memory timing to Ultra, so I reduced it to Fast to see if it still has a problem.

:(

Friend of mine called me, and his PC wouldn't boot up. Turned out to be the power supply, the power outages we have had lately I suspect took it out. Picked up a good deal on a 300W one, regularly $35, it was $10 off on sale and I had a $5 off coupon, total came to $21.34 including tax. :)

Have to check everything else later tonight to make sure it didn't take anything else down with it.

Even though we have wacky power at times, it's nice to have our own electric division, as all of Westerville is back up, and there's some parts of Columbus and suburbs that are still out.

Sucks when a cruncher is down. :(

I've suggested it to him. I've got a 650Va UPS on my system. Once the lights started flickering, I went ahead and powered it all down. :)

Slightly off topic but what can stop/prevent lightning from hitting a computer. I live at home right now and I realize a computer can be hit fairly easy and in a few weeks LyNx01 and I will be moving into a dorm together. I'm gonna buy a new APC battery backup but that really won't stop lightning even though we are in a dorm on the 5th of like 12 floors would it? Does the building have safeguards in place already because it has a large electrical system, etc.

The only really truly SAFE method is to unplug the PC and monitor from the outlet. The UPS and surge protectors offer some protection, but I've known cases where they didn't stop the damage.

A UPS is good in my situation, as the power will turn off for less than a second, then back on, then back off, then flicker. So a UPS isolates me from any brownout or power surges during that time, until I can do a safe shutdown then unplug the UPS. :)
