I took out the keyboard and found that it's the same cpu I use on my desktop.. it's a cel 566 1.5v same thing even the voltage.. and it work on my desktop.. does it mean I can put in a faster cpu in my laptop?? it has VIA chipsets and 370 socket.. can I put in like 700-1000 celeron or p3 which has 1.6-1.75 voltage..??

What's the exact model you have? You can check@HP.com to see what the specs on your notebook are, for instance my 900z takes upto a XP2000+ T-Bred mobile which is what I have in it so you just need to establish the max CPU type/speed it'll take to answer your question. I haven't seen any of the ROMPaq updates address CPU speed but once you know the specs on the board in your's the current bios will support the entire range anyways.

it's a compaq presario 1200 12XL2 .. in the maintance manual it talks about exchanging cpu but never talked about the speed it supports other than 566. I just know that it use the same desktop celeron that I use on my desky

I couldn't find any reference to your model supporting other CPUs so try posting your question in the HP/Compaq biz forums and someone will there should have a answer for you 🙂

You can put in a better processor. But you may not be able to use a Tualatin because the Tualatin uses too low of a voltage for most older MB's to handle. You could also probably use a Via C3.
