I have a more than enough points through AMEX to redeem for either the Classic 160gb or the 32 GB Touch.

BTW, I have Verizon, which give the best coverage so the iphone isn't a good option.

What advantages does the Touch have over the Classic, and would you say it is enough to overcome having less storage and costing more? Yes, it's "free" but points spend like dollars. The more I use, the less I have for other things.

Id always go for more storage personally unless you decide to switch to AT&T and then get the phone.

Ok.. I think it comes down to this...

1) Do you want it to do anything more than play music well?

2) Do you plan on using it for video, wifi, or games?

If you answered "yes" to either of those questions, then get the Touch... if you answered "no", then get the Classic.

Thanks guys. I think I'll hold off one more week just in case Apple makes changes to its line-up on the 8th. I read that something is supposed to happen after I made the thread. In any case, I'm not up on just what the Touch can do. Any suggestions on where to look? Google reveals many opinions, but not a lot of facts.

I posted this in another thread but FWIW, Apple has sent out invites to a special event being held September 9th. Look for new iPods then.

refurbished 32 GB Touch = $400
refurbished 160 GB Classic = $280

Touch has a bigger screen for video watching; but is impossible to control accurately if you're not looking at it. It also uses solid state drive, so it won't fail as readily as the Classic.
Classic can be controlled easier while driving, or with it in your pocket, has much larger capacity.

Classic:
+ Holds up to 40,000 songs
+ Up to 40 hours of music playback
+ Up to 7 hours of video playback
- 5.7 ounces
4.1 x 2.4 x 0.53 inches

Touch:
+ Multi-touch display with full QWERTY soft keyboard
+ Safari web browser
+ Email access
+ Built-in Wi-Fi
- Holds up to 7,000 songs
- Up to 22 hours of music playback
- Up to 5 hours of video playback
+ 4.2 ounces
4.3 x 2.4 x 0.31 inches

I have a touch 16GB and I find I use the non-music stuff more than I use the music stuff. Browsing, facebook, email, maps, weather, reading documents (pdfs). I've got a sudoku program for it so I can play that and listen to music at the same time.

I recommend the iPod Touch.

I've had different iPod models since 2004 (4G, 1G Nano, 5G Video, and Touch), but I would never go back to the non-Touch devices as my only mp3 player.

Since I got the iPhone 3G, I still use most of my iPods, but for different purposes. My original 4G iPod died, and gave the Touch to my sister because of redundancy with the iPhone and Touch.

Nano: running music with the Nike+ Sports Kit
Video: music in my car. screen is too small for videos.
iPhone 3G: everything else in addition to music and videos

Touch, having the videos, internet through wifi, and apps out weights have a ton more space.

There's a good chance that the Classic will not be refreshed, judging all the spyshots being for the Nano and Touch. I have a feeling that they may simply drop the price on the Classic by $30-$50 (may not even happen, unless the Nano gets a price drop) and slowly "phase it out" like they're doing with the Mini and ACD.
