I have a chain without a master link that I need to take a link out of

Good idea. how can I tell what size chain I have and what kind of store sells these? I would think HW stores but I've never seen chain parts in one. LOL

In the absence of a chain breaker, I have also used a hammer and a small pin punch.

(Make sure NOT to push the pin ALL the way out or you will be hurting when you try and put it togather again!)

Oh there's chain parts there.. just go to the chain section.. and it'll have everything you need, if it doesn't.. that's one ill equipped "hardware" store.

AM I correct in assuming this is NOT a bicycle chain?

I get people coming in all the time looking for master links for garage door openers, scooters, and the like. Good luck finding a master link! You are much better off just using one of the options I suggested. Also, a master link IS the weakest link, I avoid using them whenever possible!
