i have a Cable Modem, i would like to ''uncap'' to get a faster speed..

WHY ARE YOU YELLING? Typing in all CAPS is considered yelling. Just FYI. I'll bet you would LOVE to have your modem uncapped. We all would.

1. It's not your modem that is capped, it's your line, and it's done back at the central office.

2. Unless you know someone reeeeeeeeeeeeeallly well or come come up with a substantial bribe, your chances of getting your line speed increased, for the same money, are zero.


Sorry, but that is the truth. I could have 384kb/sec download speed if I was willing to pay $200/month for it. I'm not, so I'm at 150kb/sec.

search for past articles on uncapping cable modem.. the longest thread ever (best of my knowledge) was about someone who supposedly uncapped their modem... but then never really proved it in any way. check that out, you will be able to get your answers from that

lets just settle this, there is no way, I used to be a supervisor for ct and nyc cable modem by cablevision and you can kiss that idea good bye... really, u need to know the guy at the headend... or pay for it..

and btw, for a fact, the old lancity has the capability for the headend to log on and change firmware, check levels of the signal at tap, at the modem and see your NIC MAC which they're not able to so claim by many. the newer modem probably have the same feature so if u can uncap, they can cap again..

Believe me, if there was a way for you to "uncap" the speed of your cable modem...

a) it would be all over the web
b) the cable company would come down on it like a ton of bricks

... basically meaning that it would stop working very quickly and you'd be in the sh*t.

You get what you pay for. Remember, you'd only be stealing the bandwidth of your neighbours, and they probably wouldn't like that very much.

I was the guy who posted about uncapping his modem a long time ago. It was possible for a particular version of the lancity modem and @home. When I uncapped the modem my upload went from 50K/s to 350K/s. I lost this fantastic ability when some jackass posted how to do it on the Rogers @home newsgroup and Rogers quickly put a stop to it. For a week or so my FTP was a fun place to be.
