I have a 9800 Pro... what options should I enable or disable?

In the control panel, there are lots of antialiasing options and things... not sure what they all accomplish. My goal is to get good framerates and good quality images, though the former not at the expense of the latter. I don't need the BEST framerates, just ones that keep me competitive in online gaming, so let me know 🙂

Thanks!

That depends on what game you're playing..
In this regard, I like how HardOCP does it (gasp! heretic!).. they give you the maximum playable (that's kind of a subjective thing, but anyway..) IQ settings for different games. I'd check that out.

I'd suggest, as a start, setting it for 4xAA and 8xQuality AF. I run most of my games at 1280x1024 or 1280x960 with those settings. If you want to run at 1600x1200, you'll probably need to back the AA down to 2x or even turn it off entirely. It also depends on the games you're running, as previously stated -- a very demanding game like FarCry won't run well at those settings, but you could probably run Quake3 at 1600x1200 with everything cranked up and still put out 60+FPS all the time.

Just play around with it until you find the settings you prefer. That's my advice.

It seems from other threads that the general consensus is to opt for a higher resolution over using AA. A lot of people seem to use 1280x1024 or higher and keep AA off but have AF on 8x or 16x. I gave this a try, since I used to use 1024x768, 4x AA, 8x AF, but they ended up being pretty similar in both frame rate and image quality. It depends on the game though. UT2004 I can play at 1280x1024 and AA/AF, but with something like Joint Ops I shut off AA so that 1280x1024 is smooth.

Another thing to consider is that if your cpu is slower and you feel you are limited mostly by that, then drop down the resolution a little but crank up the AA/AF since with a powerful GPU these options are almost "free" at a lower resolution.

I have an Athlon64 3000+, so I think my CPU is adequate; I am going to keep the AA and AF at max settings for Doom3 and play at 1280, and see how that comes out for me. I think it will be okay in framerates at least enough for me to kick some a$$ online 🙂

Do you have a link to this? I'm not a HardOCP visitor and I was looking around for this just now but couldn't find it.
