IF YOU REALLY HAVE NO $$$ AND NEED A BASIC, CHEAP CARD (Otherwise see very bottom of post):
You may want to consider the Chrome S27, which is just a few dollars out of your range, but it's a good card for this price and has many features not typically found in this range:
like 8 pixel pipes
667 mhz core clock
700 mhz GDDR3 (1400 mhz actual)---not GDDR2 or DDR
128 bit memory bus (not 64 bit like a lot of other cards in this range)

It's also built on a 90 nm process which results in a cooler running card and allows it to get those awesomely high core clocks.

In benchmarks, it shows a lot of promise considering its price, getting even performance with more costly cards such as the radeon X700 and GeForce 6600

There are some bugs tho, with BF2 and AOE3, and some slight issues with AA/AF. But in terms of pure FPS, it is faster than all the other cards in your price range.

It can be found on newegg video cards

benchmark here:

If you want a more mainstream card, consider the GeForce 6600, 7300GS, or ATI X1300

Seriously tho, if you're going to be doing any kind of real gaming (not like 3D pinball), these cards won't suffice. For a mere $30 more you can get a much more competent card like an nVidia 6600GT or ATI X800GTO.

I was just about to write that and noticed 996GT2 beat me to it. The advice is very good. Trust me, save one more month and get up to $100. Most weeks you can buy a 6600 GT 128MB for $105 after rebate. Sometimes even without a rebate. It is far more powerful than messing with the 6500 or 7300. Also, please note the 6500 had a LOT of problems and was pretty much abandoned by the marketplace.

The 6600GT is twice as fast as a 7300GS, which in itself is faster than a 6500, if you want to compare. OC one to 550 mhz core (one of my friends did that on his Gigabyte 6600GT), and you will be able to play most games with some AA/AF at good resolutions (you could do that fine at stock speeds too, losing a few FPS).

$35 dollars over your budget...that's $1 per day for a month and a few days

IMO Worth every penny

QFT. I had one and I could run HL2, WoW, Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War at 1152*864 with full details with 35fps and more with almost the same system in my sig. Worth every extra $$ you'll put on it.

That's a very untrue statement. I got a 6600 over a year ago to use as a filler for my transition to PCIe and replaced my 9700 pro with it. My plan was get this $50 refurb and wait for the 6800GT release. I never ended up upgrading despite having a good fast system. The reason was simple, I did not need to upgrade. I played Doom 3, WoW, CoH/CoV and many other games just perfect at high settings on the $50 6600. Every game I wanted to play, I would have had the same exact picture quality and performance on my 6600 as I would if I had spent $500+ on a top end card. I know this for a fact because I have played the same games at lan parties using other people's systems. Except for some jittering in very specific places in some games, there was virtually no difference.

Now that I am playing DDO, I am finally getting some stuttering with all eye candy on so I have a 7900GT coming in the mail and plan to hold that sucker for years. There is certainly a place for the sub $75 cards, not every gamer needs to spend more then they are willing to for any part.

In the sub $100 range, I would look at refurbed cards. Best bang for the buck because many times you can find these at 50+% off the lowest retail price if you shop around.

Heh, I'm in the same boat, Demoth. Bought a $53 shipped Jaton 6600 non-gt newegg refurb special. And it's been adequate for far cry, CoV, GW, bf2 at 1024x768 or 1280x1024, medium-ish settings. Half the performance of a 6600GT, but still miles above the 'minimum' targeted by devs.

I was pretty blown away. Heck, even the built in X200 video does a lot better than I expected. When I get home with Oblivion in hand, that'll change. I think a 7600GT is in the cards for me short term. But even budget cards can do shockingly well -- if you get the RIGHT budget card.

If it were me, I wouldn't touch an S27 chrome with a barge pole. Without the dev budgets the big boys have the drivers are unlikely to be supported long, and the card may well render less popular titles incorrectly. It already does that on some pretty mainstream titles, according to some reviews. Hardly worth saving a few bucks for.
