I have installed a 2nd. Hard Drive for backup, running 2k; and I'd like to use that drive for "Compressed, image backup". I have Drive Image 4.0 . Before I go mucking about, I'd like to hear from several people who have done this.

Let's say I've totally screwed up my main C: drive. I'd like to be able to restore it with the backup on the other drive, which is labled D: . There's a utility in 2k pro for backup, should i just use that, the "System Backup"utility? Or should I use Drive image 4.0? Or Both?

And while we're on the subject, I have a promise Ultra 100 TX2 PCI controller, which I believe will give me an additional 4 drive (Primary Master & Slave,Secondary M & S) capability.

What I'd really like to do is to use a small drive for swapfile use,and use the other drives for MP3's, etc.

What I'm asking is do I have to use the Primary master and Slave for this, and move all other HDD's to the Promise controller?

My secondary Channel is used for my CD-ROM, and CD-R/RW.

OK, no replies....I must have been vague, or used confusing language.

Let me try again. I have a 20 Gb. HD, and have added a 30 Gb. slave HD.

I'm using windoze 2k. There's a backup program on it, anyone ever used it? Do you like it?

I want to be able to do a complete clone of my C: drive, then do incremental backups, daily.

I also have a copy of Drive Image 4.0

thanks.

I have DI4.0 and use it for image backups to a second drive. I did, once about 6 months ago screw up my C drive badly. I was farking around with things and hosed it pretty good. I restored my C using the image I had created three days earlier on my D drive. Fortunately I had created the rescue diskettes. I booted from them and followed directions, and after some major nail biting, it worked like a charm.

If I remember correctly, compressed backups actually take longer to do. From my personal perspective, I see no advantage to it. I have two images on hand at any one time. I don't keep old ones around. When I do a new one, I keep the previous just in case. Disk space is not an issue for me.

I don't think DI4.0 is the right software for incremental backups though. I don't think there are any provisions for this but could be wrong. I would check how much time is involved in creating an image. If your data is important enough for you to backup daily, you may find creating an image each day to be acceptable.

I don't know squat about 2K, but I don't feel that 2K and DI are designed to work together for backups. Use one or the other would be my gut.

I'll leave HD setup stuff to others. Just wanted to share my DI4.0 experiences. Hope this helps.

Thank you a bunch, Boomerang. It looks like Drive Image is the way to go....as long as I do the image once a week or so.I'm hoping to do the image on the D: drive, that way there's no CDR's to find, etc....I always misplace the important stuff!
