I spent 160 on this. Of course there was a better deal 2 months after. Should I wait for the current gen to drop?

I only have a 939 x2 so when is enough to much?

What resolution?
What games?

Your platform is already on the slow side for newer games, as Athlon 64 X2s have fallen quite a bit behind even the lower end C2Ds.

I might suggest holding off till you can do a whole system overall, but that's obviously up to you.

I agree with n7. that card is probably about right for an older s939 x2 system. if you're feeling bogged down by the system then just sell the whole thing and do a complete upgrade. s939 cpus are bringing rain in fs/ft and on ebay these days and 45nm intel systems are unbelievably cheap, so you should be able to do complete system upgrade for minimal $$ (or yen, lbs, etc ).

Ok that sounds like a good plan. Thanks to both of you. I will work towards a new build.

If you've got a 3ghz x2, be it s939 or am2, there's no need to worry about a cpu bottleneck if you ask me, unless you go really high-end with the videocard, and even then it's not a real bottleneck. Depending on the resolution you could gain quite a bit from a card like a HD4870 or gtx260. But it would have to be a resolution of at least 1680*1050 and preferably 1920*1280.

if you O/C your Pro [easily] to XT speeds, you have a 3870 equal

What *resolution* do you game at?

- if you go with 4870/GT260, you might consider O/C'ing or upgrading your CPU also

O/C your pro

if you are gaming on XP, you can probably afford to wait

When should I upgrade?
when you are dissatisfied with your current gaming experience

i would say simply O/C'ing your CPU/GPU will give you a whole new experience

then upgrade if you are dissatisfied with your gaming experience

and in this case, too bad .. you lose out by not O/C'ing .. it is gonna cost you more money :p

I would think that a 2900Pro would be fine for 1280x1024 and then some. If you're planning on upgrading possibly anyway, give a quick overclock a try. I know you said you don't, but it's free and why not. Pretty much every 2900 Pro will hit 800+Mhz without any fuss.

I have never been happier with a video card then I am with my 2900 Pro, it runs everything I need it to on my 22" monitor. But, even though it's enough horsepower for me, I'm really looking forward to getting a 4870 this winter for e-penis reasons I guess.

I guess I figured an OC would not really make a difference.
With my crappy athlon x2 and all.

I both overclock and underclock my 2900Pro. I upgraded the BIOS so that it underclocks the card while I'm on the windows desktop - the fan is completely silent. I overclock to 2900XT speeds for gaming. A 2900Pro overclocked to Xt speeds will play any game at 1280 x 1024. At that low of a resolution, a CPU will help make things smoother, at least it did with me. I can still play just about all my games at 1920 x 1200 (no AA).

This sounds great, the fan is a beast on this card. Thanks sir!

Link to start me off? Or should I use the google?
