Discussion I have 6 months to figure out how to explain this to the wife...

It's being delivered in July. I have my own story: "When Gibson released the Jimmy Page Les Paul, it was $3600. Now it's selling for $20000. It's an investment!!!"

Anyone have anything better?

I don't see the big deal over $1400 unless you have a habit of doing it on a regular basis. I haven't bought anything big for myself for a few years now. I could spend a few grand and my wife wouldn't say a thing. Just because she knows it's a once in a blue moon type thing.

My 90 year old former-neighbor has several 1950’s era Gibson and Fender guitars...including an original Les Paul Custom and a Standard. He’s turned down several offers of big bucks for his collection. The old fart plays fiddle, mandolin, ukulele, as well as the guitars.

Putting the son through college right now- $1000/month tuition (that's after a 60% scholarship :( )

Early '50s Les Pauls are well into the $25000-$50000 range. '57's with the new PAF pickups maybe twice that. '58, '59, and '60's models----$250K to several million! '50's Fenders aren't worth nearly that much, but there's quite a collector's market for rare Fender Broadcasters and Esquires. Those can reach up to $100K for mint models.

Gibson hollow body electrics generally don't sell that high because they've rarely been kept in temperature controlled environments, resulting in warping and cracking. Not sure what guitars he has but it would be cool to take some photos of the collection and maybe put a story about him on Reverb.com :)

well, I thought that you thought he was posting some other person's fake example of a price--not that he photoshopped yours to show how great you are at snagging a deal.

difference between: "look at what this guy paid for it!"
vs: "look at how much I saved myself!"

anyway, it confused me at first until I saw the name was the same.
