The monitors have both VGA and DVI input.

Can I just get 2 or 3 mid-low end cards and a motherboard that will fit them, and hook up the 6 monitors?

I also have a 8800 GTS that is currently in my system, but doubt I could get that + the other needed cards in order to support the monitors? I have a few old AGP video cards but realize ill just have to add some more newer cards.

Primarily I just want 6 monitors for having multiple displays open, but it would be a cool option if I could get video or something to span them with some software or something.

thanks for any help

You could get one of those + a second card of similar type with 2 outputs and should be fine.
Or get 3 cards.
Not sure how well video will work, might have to all be done on CPU but it should be possible to span (with some CPU load due to it all being done on the CPU).

You could either get a mobo with 2 or 3 PCIe slots, or go with PCI cards on a cheaper mobo (or a mix of PCIe and PCI).

I looked at that but I think youd need some expensive adapter for 4 of the ports or something. The articles I read said 2 of the ports could be adapted but the other 4 had to stay displayport without an additional piece of equipment.
you got it backwards, only 2 of the displayport outputs require adapters. with a setup like that you could game across all 6 monitors, would be awesome :awe:

But the 2 that require it are about another $100 a pop for the adapter?

Yeah tempting to game across but if i go with a cheaper solution starting out i can switch to that later on if i really want to... the damn bezels and crosshair problems are a bit of an annoyance factor

You should be able to get away with DP -> VGA adapters if you are running VGA monitors, and then should be <$40 or so each.
