I have 400$ to spend on a upgrade...

On this,
AMD FX 8350
MSI OC R290
8 Gigs Ram
500GB Samsung SSD
1TB Black HD
Right now I am leaning towards a new CPU/Mobo but am open to any/all suggestions.
And if links are provided I prefer Amazon over Newegg.

keep the $400, you are doing fine.

This, unless you are into a few games in which the FX does really poorly, like RTS games, or some online mmo types. 4690k,, 4790k, or overclocked 5820k will give you better performance overall, but probably not worth 400.00, unless you have money to burn. Or you could wait for the new AMD video cards to come out, but I doubt you will be able to get a 400.00 one that is a big upgrade over the 290.

I would recommend upgrading to Intel, unless the games you play happen to be easy on the CPU. You can sell the FX set for a good amount of cash. An Intel CPU will consume less power so that will also pay back some of the cost of the upgrade, over time.

i5-4690K if you want to OC, Xeon E3-1231V3 otherwise. Or wait until Skylake.

i5-4690K + Gigabyte Z97X-UD3H-BK $350 ($340 AR) @ newegg
or
Xeon E3-1231 V3 $247 @ amazon + Gigabyte H97-D3H $89 @ amazon = $336

Ya that's what ive been leaning towards and if there is any weak link in my system it is the 8350.

I'd agree with the others. At least wait for Skylake. Your current rig is fine, and if anything the prices should drop a fair amount when Skylake releases if you still want to go with DDR3 gear.

You know, it doesn't seem like that happens nearly as reliably anymore. (Just a general impression based on watching prices on Amazon and at Microcenter, etc.)

Looking at the price history for the very popular i5-3570k, its low price was actually before Haswell came out.

i3-3220 was similar.

It doesn't seem like Intel chips really drop in price significantly until it starts to get hard to find motherboards for them. (See: LGA775 chips on eBay.)

OTOH, maybe I just lucked into the two examples that accidentally reinforce the anecdote that I thought I was observing. *shrug*

Actually, if you are going to 1440p, a new video card might be the best option, assuming you have a decent overclock on the 8350. Unfortunately, the only upgrade that makes sense is the 980Ti, which is 650.00 or more. You might wait and see if the new amd cards offer a significant upgrade in that price range. Or get another 290 and go crossfire.

that's my experience watching intel processor prices as well. most retailers don't drop the prices of the now-NOS intel processors. every once in a while you might find microcenter or fry's selling a blowout just to clear inventory but that's rare, in my experience (and very YMMV).

once the processors hit the used market that's a different deal.

Agree 100%. The idea that the older model will drop in price simply does not hold true for Intel processors.
