the national geographic society is pretty close, they have stuff all over the building and a neat exhibit of photos and artifacts outside around the building. highly recommended, i was there just last week.

update:

Went to the National Cathedral instead... it was nearer than the smithsonians, and worth the 2 hours or so I spent there.
