Like I said I have two computers and only one monitor, till I get some other money around to buy another. But until then, can I hook them up on a network, then use a program like remote administrator to use both of them from one monitor? If this is even possible what exactly would I be able to do with this setup. I mean how limited would this make me compared to having 2 computers with 2 monitors on a network?

Or just buy a KVM switch, although one of those will cost you nearly as much as a cheap 14" monitor.

note: KVM = keyboard/video/mouse = lets you hook up you K,V, & M to switch which hooks to both PCs, you can switch back and forth with a button.

I think you can get a two port for around $60, but I haven't looked lately.

KVM's.. if not of excellent quality, tend to degrade your video signal quite a bit... i've seen it first hand. I personally use VNC.. tight vnc is a variant of it that's suppose to be faster.. but i haven't noticed it. if you search google for VNC, you'll find the main site.

KVM's are expensive, but really useful if you are tight on space. If you have a KVM, then you also don't need to buy a second keyboard and mouse. It saves a lot of space and is really handy. Belkin makes quality KVM switches if you're interested....

I use XP's remote desktop between two of my computers that share a monitor. It works really well, and it doesnt cost any extra. I would buy a second monitor before I bought a switch. I would only buy a switch if I had 3 or more boxes and one monitor.

Edit: That Linksys switch is pretty sweet though! Cheep Cheep.

I freakin hate keyboard and mouse clutter. I would have to say KVM for me....VNC does look interesting though.

VNC has a fairly weak password algorithm and the password can be brute forced pretty easily; if you're going to do it make sure your 2nd IP doesn't bind VNC to an interface that is directly connected to the internet; consider Terminal Services instead; it is more robust and uses Windows authentication, so you can use NTLMv2 to hash your passwords.

Linksys 2 port KVM $55.44 with cables @ buy.com

and they work great i have 2 of them the 2 port and the 4 port.. they don't even need power.

I agree with Satlin. If you're using XP on the computer w/o the monitor, you can install the Remote Desktop software on the computer with the monitor and use Remote Desktop to access the other computer. Remote Desktop would also work if the other computer was Windows2000 with terminal services enabled.
