So mid next month, I will be in New York with my girlfriend, and unfortunately, we will only have 1 full day in New York City. Sunday, we will most likely be with family, and there is a chance that we will not hit New York City that day. If we do, great, if not, I know that Monday we will get a chance to explore on our own. So with that, I want to spend the full day as much as I can. I dont want to rush and just hit the places for the sake of hitting the places, but I at least want to hit the 'main tourist places' and get the NY experience

I know I initially had an interest to go to the statue of liberty, brooklyn bridge, metropolitan meusem of art, central park, and really just walk times square (when I thought I had more time).

Im trying to figure out how to plan it. So is it as simple as: Wake up early, to go ellis island, tour it, take pictures, and then get back to manhattan?

Once in Manhattan, are all the touristy places pretty much all i one spot for me to take the subway and or walking distance?

I'm still trying to figure out that with one day, how much we can do, realistically

If it is too much, with only 1 day, how would you do it?

For my taste: Peter Lugar's steakhouse in Brooklyn, then pick 3 or 4:

Wall Street (cheer on occupy), art district near Central Park, Central Park (maybe a horse carriage), tour bus, top of Empire State Building, Broadway show, 5th Avenue stores.

The met is nice but probably best when you have time.

An authentic cab ride is quite the experience, too.

Shake Shack if you like burgers

Mamouns if you like falafels.

Chicken & Rice on 53rd & 6th if you like to get the runs

What about the statute of liberty? *Is it difficult to start with the statute in the morning and then hit the bridge and then times square?

If you do the full statue of liberty and Ellis island tour (about 5 hours) on the first ferry at ~8:30 AM, you should have ample time to make it to the bridge and to Times Square by end of afternoon/early evening. You'll have even more time if you just take the cruise and only see the statue of liberty.

Get a metrocard for the day and download/print a copy of the subway map from the MTA website. If you are new to NYC transit, make sure you are going uptown when you need to go uptown, and downtown when you need to go downtown (ask people on platform in addition to looking at signs). I can't tell you how many tourists end up going the wrong way or getting confused, even though the NYC subway is among the world's simpler ones.
