Try back of pickup truck with cab from upstate NY to downstate Ohio in winter. Loved those as a kid.

It tells me you must be going either east or west on I-10, b/c if you were in south Alabama or Georgia, you wouldn't have a signal.

Ha! One of my childhood memories was lying on the back seat of our Buick S/W ('57 hardtop [no B pillar] which I always thought was beautiful and is now a much desired classic) somewhere in rural Canada when some farmer pulled out right in front of my Dad.

My Dad had to SLAM on the brakes and the latches on the back seatback let go and the luggage came cascading down on me as my Dad let loose a looooooong string of intricate curses in French at the guy, a language I rarely heard him speak, even with his French mom (survivor of the Titanic) who lived with us.

Drove from Houston to Vegas with one stop (halfway point, which was still in Texas, btw). Only real road trip as a kid. That, and a bus ride to St. Paul one year.

I've made quite a few drives from Alabama to Chicago and Alabama to Houston. Did those nonstop. No reason to stop for a 12 hours drive... Also, drove from Houston to LA once. Flew back though.

My family made the drive from Detroit to Orlando a few times...one time with relatives and we rented an Econoline. We slept in the van and I had a row to myself, those were good times. Game Boys, Game Gears, a shitload of batteries...
