I decided last week it was time to build a new computer. I was dead set on not spending over $600 on everything, minus RAM and HD that I am reusing from my old computer, until I can get some more funds. Well, after countless threads here and beating myself up I opted to go with the Opteron 165 over the Athlon64 3200+, after MANY of you recommended it. I also can't believe I just dropped $109 on an Enermax Liberty 500w power supply. I never thought the day would come when I would spend over $50 on a power supply, but after hanging out here for a few weeks I can see why. And $109 (on sale) for a case without a power supply?!?! I must be smoking crack!

With that, here's my new system!

AMD Opteron 165 Denmark 1GHz FSB 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket 939 Dual Core Processor
DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra
eVGA 256-P2-N516 Geforce 7800GT 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 VIVO PCI Express
Antec Performance I P180 Silver Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
ENERMAX Liberty ELT500AWT ATX12V 500W Power Supply
Reusing Corsair Value Select 2x512mb PC3200 (until I get more money)
Reusing WD 7200RPM ATA133 80GB (Going to add a 200GB in a month or so)

Total came out to $940 shipped. Only $340 over budget :)

So, how did I do? I think this thing is going to be a screamer from the get-go. I'm going to see how high I can OC it with the Corsair I have, but after reading about incompatability with the DFI I may be forced to sell it soon and snag some good memory. Any recommendations?

Thanks for all your help. I really do appreciate it!

PSU is good.

I spent ~ £90 on my S12! Couldn't believe that either...my Enermax 350W one was a champ and it lasted very well. Still got it

Power Supply is the most critical piece of equipment you can purchase for your computer.
With that said i have had many systems where I bought the case with the generic PSU included and had NO problems!!

Until within the last year or so....
So I decided if I am going to purchase a seperate PSU I might as well go all the way.
I am very happy that I did get a seperate PSU from the case.

I know own 2 PC Power & Cooling PSU`s.......who would have figured!!

Nice system btw!!

id look into OCZ ram as an upgrade. I love mine. Also for some wierd reason the DFI boards overclock better when u use ramslots 2 and 4 instead of 1 and 3. So if ur on 1 and 3 u might try moving the ram over to 2 and 4 and try to oc there.

This is from dfi forums btw incase some of u guys call shins.

The ram wont hurt your overclocking. Im using the same stuff. The way i look at it is why spend 200-300 on ram for only a small gain. Thats as much as the CPU cost. That is as much as the 7800 gt cost. Thats like 3 power supplies. You get the point.

Your system looks really similar to mine. ;-) Your going to love it.

Wow, Robert...nice OC! What kind of RAM are you using? And yes, I agree with you on the expensive RAM.

Enjoy! I went WAY over-budget recently too. I was supposed to just stop at a $500 board and CPU bundle + cheap mid-range PCIe graphics but I COULDN'T HELP MYSELF. Damn Hot Deals forum. ;)

Corsair Value Select. Just like the stuff you have. If you do go for expensive stuff just remmeber timings are more important than bandwith (speed).

No problem pushing the Corsair VS up to 273MHz FSB with 5:6 memory divider. Timing is 2.5-3-3-6-1T. You would probably not be able to find RAM capable of running faster than 270MHz @ 1:1 ratio (same as FSB).

Yep..there is a known compatibility issue with the DFI motherboard, and corsair value select..so you might run it to a problem there..

congrats on the new system...you can still save $100....get a fortron 450w to drop down th $50 and get a $50 case....there's quiet a few good cases out there for $50

and if you're smoking crack...make sure not to do it around the rig ;)

What's the sense of getting all this new stuff and not putting it in a new high end Lian Li or Silverstone case?:D. You know you want to...hehehe!

yep, value ram can sometimes be a real value! My Kingston Value Ram can run at 2.5-3-2-5@DDR440!!! Gotta love it.
