So I got a new car in August, and wanted to get my stereo installed in it. It consists of a head unit, satellite radio tuner, and amp/sub. I know how to do all of this myself, but I'm lazy, so I figure I'll take it to best buy across the street, they can do it while I'm at work for $150-$175 or so.

Ohhh was I wrong. Here is the quote they gave me:

Labor
Radio installation - $50 - this is a bit more than I'd expect, but I'd normally have accepted it
Custom labor - $19 - because I have a car that requires a dash kit...I have the dash kit they just have to put it in, but this isn't too unreasonable, its probably more work than the radio itself
Amp - $69 - pretty standard price
Satellite - $72 - what?? This is the easiest part! Its an external radio, you literally plug it in, stick it on the windshield (suction cup), and run the antenna wire to the roof.
Sub - $36 - The subs are already installed in the box, they're from my old car. But oh no, that's not good enough. They have to take them out and re-wire them to "their specs". What specs? You take a speaker cable, and you plug it into the terminals.

Parts
Amp Wiring Kit - $110 - I already have an amp kit. its a good, 2 gauge kit I got off Amazon for $35. They want to charge me $110 for a 4 gauge kit, because "they can't use outside wires"
FM Modulator - $30 - to get the satellite radio "crystal clear". Huh?? I have an aux cable. You plug it in directly, its the clearest you can get. An FM Mod makes it WORSE...and did I mention that my satellite radio has an FM mod built in?
Wiring Harness - $35 - they can't use the one included with the dash kit, same reasoning as the amp kit
Loose Ends - $30 - he didn't really explain what this was, just that it makes it better

Total: $450!!!! Yea right, Best Buy. A lot of suckers might come through your doors, but you aren't getting me with that.

Real quality installation takes a lot of time and is rightfully expensive.

Best buy inflated the prices somewhat, but not by a lot.

Other than the Sirius tuner, I'm not too upset about the labor charges. Those aren't too bad. Its insisting I buy their parts - which are worse than the ones I have - for ridiculous prices.

Wait in the parking lot after work for one of their installers and offer him cash to install it on his day off.

I just priced it on Circuit City's website.

firedog Mono/2-Channel Car Amplifier Installation
INS AMPSUB $60.99

firedog Car Satellite Radio Installation ? Surface-Mounted
INS DSRBASIC $39.99

firedog Car Stereo Installation ? Head Unit Only
INS RADIO $45.99

Total $146.97
Tax: $8.82
$155.79

I've gotten things installed there before and I'm pretty sure they don't have the "you must buy our wiring" rule. Plus, I don't think they charge more to install the dash kit - I was originally going to get the radio/dash kit at the store, he priced it out and didn't have anything like that on there. Its just most of a hassle because the best buy is right across the street from work, so I can just drop it off and have it done while I'm working...

Oh well, guess its worth a little wasted time to save $300.

Best buy is far from a quality installation. The only thing that even looks decent is the amp install...since that can get pretty rough, especially if they can't find a grommet and have to drill through the firewall.

36 bucks to rewire subs?? That should take like 5 minutes even though its not necessary.

I never took my car to BB for audio. I took mine to CC. One time was excellent. They installed a modern Pioneer unit in my Mustang (67), did some custom work to make it fit. They had a promo to waive installation labor. They only charged me for a generic wiring harness, and a universal install kit. They did a ton of labor, and they even cleaned up some of my crappy wiring underneath the dash.
The other CC was an annoying experience for my other car. The deck I bought had an aux input for mp3 players and the such. They asked if I wanted it connected. I said yeah sure, but they wanted an extra 20 install charge, and another 10 bucks for the male to male cable.
I told them it was a joke to charge me extra, all they had to do is plug one end of the cable into the other, and not rape me for the cable, so I declined.
I later bought a better cable from target for 3.99, went to find the removal tools from the Pioneer box, and they took them. I called the store, and he said he could arrange for me to pick them up at a closer store. I went to that store, and said they are giving me the removal tools under protest, and he said he feels like changing his mind.
I told him to f off. The tools come with the radio I bought, they TOOK it. They have no right to do that. Once he realized that I knew they all came with them, he gave them to me.
I should have done the whole thing myself.

i don't touch anything that best buy sells for car audio. not least among the reasons is their crap service for too much money.

I'm glad I read this. I want to get a new stereo installed in my car soon. Where do you guys recommend going for someone like me who has zero experience with car audio stuf?

Well, I had good experiences in the past with circuit city...I'll be going there on Friday to get a price on this install, remind me and I'll let you know how it goes.

If you're buying it there, I like Circuit City's brands better than Best Buy's too.

Find you a local stereo shop and use them...They will most likely save you money and they will work with you on package deals as well. No need to get raped by CC or BB.

Jeez. $110 for a wiring kit. If you're looking to install your own amp, don't bother buying an amp wiring kit from BB or CC or whomever. Go to your local welding supply shop and buy some arc welder cable. Last year I got 20 feet of 4ga and 10 feet of 2ga for under $30. Try to do THAT at Best Buy.

There is up sell a lot of times, depends on how much of a sucker you look like and how likely they think you'd pay.

I do my own installs, but I'd have to say they end up costing more than even those BB prices due to dampening and better components. Plus the fact that only I know how my alarm is set up.

With any of the big box stores installs some know what they are doing, some don't...fewer really give two shits if they do it right though and that's what sucks.

Hopefully you get a tech that is looking to leapfrog his way into his own business or work for a higher end shop. There is a guy on Sounddomain called Murph that can tell you if you are getting hosed or not.

I will say though it's like using a chainsaw...most think it's easy to do...in reality sometimes it's not.

I got it installed at circuit city, $180. It seems they did a pretty good job too, definitely more thorough than I would have been since I'm lazy, haha.

I completely wrote them off when they told my friend they had an adapter that turned an output to an input.

HAHA!! No way!

I think they mistook a kid for a staff member or the guy was on his last day there.
