I transferred all my tuition money into my checking account - assuming that they took Visa credit cards; since everyone else on earth does.

However, Penn State does not accept anything except Discover and MasterCard. WTFHat? So instead of using my check card, I just wrote a check and stuffed it into that flimsy envelope thing. Adds 37 cents to my tuition costs :(

Visa doesn't allow the company to charge for CC use. Thus, Penn State's 2% Convenience Fee violates Visa's terms. So by adding 37 cents, you just saved 2% of your tuition bill. At Penn State, that could be hundreds of dollars you just saved by not using a CC.

Meh, I'll only have to do it twice a year. And I figure the gigantic numbers will serve to remind me of exactly how f'ing serious this business is.

Not quite. They are virtually identical - set up by the same banks. But they are separate companies with very minor differences. In this case, since Penn State charges 2%, Visa's minor difference from Master Card is critical.

Well, the Bursar's office at PSU.edu is probably the only place on the entire planet that's set up like that.
