I have a roomate who apparently is going to run is air conditioner 24/7 throughout the summer regardless of the temperature.

I live in a house with 5 guys, we each have our own room, but we split the costs of utilities evenly. He is the only one who runs his AC like this. It's 78 degrees outside, and that is the highest it's been today. He leaves it running constantly!!! Not that he would know it is comfortable outside since he never leaves the f*cking house.

I have told him 3 separate times to stop but he insists that it is actually hot. One of my other roomates has also tried to get him to cut back on the waste. Here I sit with my window open like all my other roomates, but this guy feels content to waste electricity.

What would you do?

I went to switch off his circuit but couldn't figure out which one it was.

- Break the air conditioner

- Threaten him with bodily harm or eviction if he doesn't knock it off

- Make him buy a fan for his room

:D

You're wrong. He's entitled to keep his room as cool as he wants. I for example blast AC at my house, work and my car at full power. What you need to do is make him pay extra on the next electric bill and that should be the end of it. Now if he refuses to do that - then he's a complete assjack and I'd kick him out of the house.

hehe, we've seriously considered throwing him out of the house. but to me, the bullsh*t that would come with that would be worse than the extra $$ we have to pay. my biggest gripe is that he is just so inconsiderate.

yeah but how do you split up the bill in a fair way? you can't just arbitrarily assign usage to each house member.

and no he isn't entitled to make us pay to freeze his room when it is in the 70's

Compare the bill with the one you got last month, when you didn't have to use air conditioner. And then make him pay the difference. If you wanna be really accurate about it - take last 3 month and average them out. In my experience, it shouldn't cost more than $20-30 per month.

why not have a meeting among your roommates?

try to talk it out, gather some ideas, and see what you come up with

1. splitting the cost (if you have no idea how to do this, then you are in trouble in the real world) If you are really adamant, then just close the vent to other rooms, and have it go only to his room. Have him pay the full amount.

2. have him buy his own AC unit
3. have him buy his own fan

We have a similar battle where I live. We're in the middle of a heat wave with temperatures in the 90s. I'm always the first home and I always put the AC on as soon as I step in the door. My roommate always turns it off and only likes it on at night, when HE goes to bed.

The only reason he turns it off is because he's cheap.

I just turn it back on.

Just find out how much electricity his A/C uses and make him pay the difference.

buy him one of those battery powered pocket fans and then tie an ice cube to a string...
give it to him and tell him learn to use them or pay the extra cause its not that hot :D
sheesh...78 and you need AC? I dont even have AC in my car and I'm in AZ...the most i use at work (there are NO windows mind you AND no AC/Cooler) is a small little fan at my desk :p of course when i come home it looks like I've been working out....

I'd pay an extra $50 a month for 24/7 air conditioning.

I run mine during the winter. It's the greatest invention ever.

During the winter??? Where do you live, a volcano? I live in SoCal and winter is VERY mild here compared to a lot of places in the US, but I don't run the A/C during the winter.

I live in South Carolina. The only time I run heat is when it snows. That's usually 1 week out of the year.

Um, some people handle heat a lot worse than others. Personally if it gets over 74-75 or so I'll start sweating if there's no fan. Even if there IS fan I won't be able to sleep unless it's under the 74-75 mark. No, I am not a fat-ass (anymore anyway :)), it's just that I'm naturally hot.

Look at your bills before he was running the AC all the time (say perhaps the winter), compare to the bills now and ask him to pay the difference. If he refuses, then you have a problem.

You guys ever consider that he may actually feel hot? People are VERY different in their comfort levels. Here in my office I have my own AC unit in addition to central and I keep it at about 68 the year round... I get hot easy. OTOH, a the wife of a friend of mine gets cold in a HEARTBEAT and doesn't even want the AC on unless its in the 90's... and even then she wants it to be set at around 80 or so.

He is the only one who runs his AC like this.
The wording "his AC" makes me think that these are window units. Is this true? Just curious.

You also don't mention what part of the country you are in. If you're in a fairly humid area, it's possible that the humidity makes him feel more uncomfortable than the heat itself. A dehumidifier could help rectify the problem in that case, but it would probably cost more that the difference in the electric bill.

Does this guy ever complain of it being too warm in the winter? Does he sleep with a window open at night (winter)?

I think the only thing that I would make certain of is that he has a pretty efficient unit and that it is the correct size for his living area. Too small and it will run non-stop, which is useless... too large and it will cool the room down too fast and not remove as much moisture as it should, which leads to people turning the thermostat down even lower to make it run longer to get rid of the "clammy" feeling.

Good Luck.

Joe
