Turns out the brrrp sound I started hearing under my desk on occasion recently was coming from the subwoofer component of the Yamaha YST MS-28 computer speakers I've been using since 1999. Not sure what triggers it so I retired the MS-28s and re-activated my Altec Lansing ACS45.1 sub & speakers (which I had also bought in 1999 as I was gaming with 3D sound at the time). Right now I have to get used to the Altec sound again, more bass a little bit less highs. I did not even play my music/games loudly as I don't like to bother the neighbours (some say they never hear me in my apartment).

Bummer. These ACS45.1 speakers and my Logitech Internet keyboard are now the only remaining parts from my first computer (1999) that are still in use with my current desktop computer. Keeping the Yamaha in storage for the moment as I hate to throw away stuff and I need to figure out how it's broken (or is it the electronics) but I'd have to open the subwoofer to do this. Might still have a use for it.

I hate when stuff breaks, even after 14 years of daily use. :(

No need. The Altec have laid unused for the last decade or so and should last a few more years. The sound is different though. Even playing with the equalizer in Winamp, it's not the same. I guess I will no longer notice it in a few days though.

I miss winamp...I used to use that all the time. I got hooked on Windows Media Player after importing everything to it so Google Music would index everything cleanly-

14 years for computer speakers? That's pretty awesome.

I'm calling you out for a brag thread, denni :)

My oldest component is a set of Creative 5.1 speakers. I got them in 2002. They're currently on standby though, and I'm using a Dell 2.1 set I got in 2006. 5.1s don't make sense in my current computer location. The Dells get extra durability points for spending a couple years in a truck under torturous conditions. I was using them and a laptop as my stereo.

I switched over to a set of MAudio Studiophile speakers that I got from Woot for a really cheap price. Highly recommended.

I had some of those Yamaha YSTs. Great speakers but mine were "borrowed" by one of my offspring when they left home half a dozen years ago.

PS-my completely uneducated WA guess is that the amp went, unless it's something as simple as a fuse.

I'm still using an Altec Lansing ACS31 speakers/subwoofer on my secondary computer that I have had since around 1996.

Still going strong with my Logitech Z-560 set that I scored from Dell for $100 back in 2001.

400W of power!

I'm still using the Logitech z-5500 speakers. Great quality. I wonder if there are better computer speakers out there now.

I have a set of Yamaha YST MS50 speakers from ValueAmerica that finally died recently after about 15 years.

Heh-heh...I'm still rockin the Boston Acoustics BA635 speakers that came with a Gateway system in 1997...

They sound like crap...cut off the highs and lows...but my hearing is shot anyway, so "premium sound" would likely be wasted on me anyway...:p

My bookshelves are still going strong about 6 or 7 years later. Same receiver and sub too. I should really swap out the sub, but I got nowhere good to place one in my room.
