I hate the way my employer handles pay

So the managing partner's wife does the payroll for the office. She only shows up once every two weeks to do the payroll. If there are any mistakes in pay, they will be dealt with the next time she comes in. Nobody else is able to access her password protected local stuff (not even the partners  )

So I'm getting paid tomorrow via direct deposit and I can see the pending amount. It's supposed to be in the neighborhood of 400 dollars as she already passed out the check stubs, and she DD'ed 1289.75 into my account. Someone is going to be in for a surprise if they look at their online statement tomorrow and see they only got paid 400. It probably won't be solved for another few days either, so I hope that person doesn't have any bills to pay.

Where are you located? Payroll laws may make that illegal, and carry some pretty hefty penalties.

Maybe you should call her and make her lazy ass come in first thing tomorrow and fix it.

So they mixed up my paycheck with someone elses, and she wrote a big check on Sunday thinking her paycheck was going to be in there before her check cleared but it's not. They want me to go withdrawl the cash from my bank so she can deposit it in her account. The paycheck hasn't even cleared on my side, and I don't keep the 900 dollar difference in my checking account to begin with.

If it wasn't for screwing the other person over, I wouldn't do a damn thing.

That's called good controls. Only 1 person should have access to something sensitive as the payroll module.

All they have to do is wire the $$ into her account so she doesn't write a hot check, then wait till the check clears on my side and I will give them the cash or write them a check. It's not like they don't have the $900 dollars.

Which should be either the managing partner, or a parttime HR rep, not someone who shows up once every two weeks to pay the bills.

And what happens if she's injured, or even worse, dies?

Just because it sounds like this lady is incompetent, I would tell her "no way". Otherwise, next thing you know she just figures "well, he gave her the money, now it's corrected." but you get stiffed come tax time because she didn't correct your W2.

if you don't have them correct it, you will be repsonsible to pay the taxes on the extra $900, even if you withdraw it and give it to the co-worker.

There's gotta be some sort of federal/state regulations on this kind of thing, especially if it's a medium to larger business. Way back when I was 16 I worked at a restaurant that had financial issues. The owner would pay me cash out of the register, with a hand-written pay stub every week. Needless to say when it came tax time, she was scrambling to figure out how much I had made, and to be able to prove it if and when, and she was, audited.

Personally, if a company can't keep track of their cash like that, I wouldn't be there. I have a friend that worked for a construction company, that would pay their employees out of a different account every week, and sometimes the checks would bounce. In the end they always got their cash, but it was a hassle, and they got the state on the owner over it.

I actually think that is the opposite of good internal control. Anything completely controlled and accesible by only one person leaves things open to manipulation. There should be a person above her that has access as well. She could be laundering money and nobody would have a clue.
