I hate the times we live in.

I walked my dog just now and I saw a guy who usually walks his dog around the time I do. This guy had the best looking dog (German Shepard mutt mix) you can imagine.

A few months ago he got laid off of work and went on unemployment. To make a long story short, his dog got sick last week and got violent diarrhea and took the animal to a vet.

Because he had no money, the vet refused to look at the dog and told the man he couldn't leave him there. He was begging in the street trying to scrape up $100 to get his dog checked out. He carried his dog home, he put him in his bed and lied down until the dog died.

I am speechless. Looking at a 60 year old man tear up for his pet made me sad as hell. :(

Just felt like ranting. Fuck this economy.

I would give anyone who is begging in the street money if their dog was dying. After the fact, not so much. Besides, he isn't too much of a stranger. I'd have tried to help if I got there in time.

Stuff that just ain't right happens all the time, and has since the beginning of time. Why are we so outraged about it now? In years past it might have been the man himself rather than his dog.

It sucks that we can't fix every little thing and make everyone's life a "happily ever after" type story. The thing is, I'm not outraged about it because I would never expect my life to be that way unless I had the money to pay for it.

I know It feels like a dirty cheat every time life deals you a rotten hand. Overall, I feel very lucky to live in the times we live in though.

I live in a magical kingdom called Washington DC...a place where government is hiring...and federal employees make more and more than their private counterparts...but darkness is creeping into our land...and normal people whose lives were probably normal a year or two ago are now walking the streets homeless.

Anyway, kidding aside, I am not one who gives cash to the homeless. I do not trust their intentions no matter what they say. Instead, I take them into the restaurant (Subway, etc.), watch them order, and then pay for their lunch.

Had I been in your situation, recognizing the gravity of the situation and the way it affected me, and assuming I had $100 to spare, I would have taken the man and his dog to the vet and paid for it all myself with the agreement it was a one-time deal and that I would not be responsible for any possible forthcoming medical treatment for the dog. Then again, if euthanasia were the only option, I may have considered paying for that.

Anyway, that's me.

Shens. No one who has half a brain would give up after ONE vet. The animal shelters, ASPCA and many private shelters all have low cost vets on hand that are willing to work out a plan with you. Worst case, he could have given the dog to the ASPCA and they would have cared for the dog.

We obviously need Universal Healthcare for pets. It's the only solution.

He's not homeless. He has an apartment that he is barely keeping on unemployment. He just didn't have any money to take care of his dog. Guy is down on his luck and his dog was his only companion. I don't think he has any family, at least I've never seen him with any.

The guy is old and probably didn't have the means of transportation, or the know how to get to another facility. I wouldn't have thought of the ASPCA myself to tell you the truth.

Buy him a new dog to help ease his sorrow.
