There are a couple of things I really hate about the cheap Chinese fans on this 400 quid video card. I want to vent some frustration.
For a start the fans when revved up make an awful droning noise, normally this is not really an issue as the card more or less stays silent even when under load. Only when you turn the PC you get to hear them but it makes what is otherwise a very expensive piece of equipment sound flimsy.
Another issue that has always been present is the right hand side fan emits a rattling noise when the fan power is around 59%. I figured this out by just messing around with the settings to try and actually find out if the droning sound was just a characteristic of the fans. I ended up taking the card to pieces to see if I could possibly oil the baring, but I found out that these fans are not serviceable. Anyway after a few tube searches the fans sound very similar to what I had so I concluded that it was just a characteristic of the fans themselves.
So the card has been performing great for about 8 months but now that rattling noise has started to occur when the fans are idle. I am sure you will understand how much this grates when you have a normally solid and silent PC. The fan will rattle for about 10 - 15 minutes per session of using the PC from power up then it goes away. This can happen from using the PC straight away or 2 - 3 hours later. If I open up the case and tap the card it stops until next time the PC is switched off, cooled down and powered back up again.
I am not the only one with this problem, some people of Youtube have it a lot worse, maybe the fate of my card is to turn out like this.
I'll have the PC to bits over the next few weeks as its due a clean and I'll have a look at the card I am hoping it is the cooler assembly that is resonating from the fan.
Before I purchased this card I tried a reference ASUS GTX 480 which also had a droning fan, funnily enough other consumers reported the same problem on the stores web forum. What is the crack with these shitty fans manufacturers use on expensive components? Apart from being very annoying the cooling is also pretty fundamental, at least invest some quality in that department. I know fans can go tits up from any manufacturers but they should start using better parts. Asian company's just don't get perceived build quality at all.
I have gone through lots of ASUS products and on the whole ASUS generally makes good gear, but their QA is rubbish.
