Customer calls up that we've been dealing with for a couple calls now. Basically his DSL router is trained, we can see cells passing in both directions, but he can't ping anywhere, including his ISP's gateway.

Because he is in bridging mode, the fact that there is a nice stream of cell flow in both directions virtually eliminates any chance of it being a problem on the Qwest side of things. His ISP has already looked at this & told him it was fine. No, it's not fine.

So I had the customer call his ISP.

Me: This is Gregg from Qwest Pro DSL, I've got one of our customers on the line with me. Basically he's trained, I'm seeing sufficient cell flow in both directions, but he can't ping anywhere. He is unable to ping his default gateway.
ISP Tech: Let me take a look at a few things...
ISP Tech: Everything looks OK here, I am unable to ping his gateway either, which means it's a problem with the Line.
Me: Huh? The gateway is on your side, if you can't ping that from your side of the line that means that the problem is on your side.
ISP Tech: If the customer is not connected to the gateway, I would not be able to ping it.
Me: Umm... No. A gateway is a router, that router should be there whether the DSL line is working or not.
ISP Tech: Umm... Let me get you to someone who can troubleshoot more in depth than I can.

I doubt he caused the problem, but his "more in depth" person actually knew WTF he was talking about & was able to fix it relatively quickly.

The scary thing is if I'd just sent the customer over there he'd be calling back in right about now.

Bastards.

I hate stupid callers. When the call in and say "I am a network admnistrator, an MSCE, CCNA, etc, so I know what I am doing, there is a problem with your product" and I teach them how to install a driver. Its great. I have noticed, thought that CCNA's or CCNE's are much better than the MSCE's that call. I am starting to have a low view of them here lately.

It's funny how they call themselves techs when they don't seem to know much about tech stuff.

<<At least he knew when to get help instead of guessing at things. >>

Yeah but what's he doing working in an environment he knows nothing about?

If he's trying to learn, I hope he took notes when the higher tech handled the problem. :p:D

Well, at least he was honest to say that he didn't know much about it.

That is better than some techs who pretend to know it all.

If he'd said that I wouldn't have had a problem, but he didn't. Instead he tried to tell me that he wouldn't be able to ping one of their gateway routers unless the customer was connected to it. He also told me that the customer was the only one on that gateway (after I asked him how many customers were on that gateway). That could have been true, but is extremely unlikely.

I know what you mean. and I am an MCP, atleat I'll admit when I don't know a whole lot on the subject. I know this one guy who is soo bad that he won't admit when he's wrong even after you prove it to him.

One thing all you tech geeks have to remember.
These cisco people who have their certs may not be hardcore techies like the majority of people on here.

Ive met many CCNA and CCNPs that really were not good at all with localmachines and hardware, but would run circles around ANY person on this forum when it comes to network infastructure.

Ill tell you from experience, the ISP network end is much more complicated then you think it is. Yea Great the cx (customer) could be passing level 1 cells, meaning they know that the NIC is physically connected. But that don't mean its passing level3 cells.

I know exactly what you mean. I had a guy call once and he was having modem issues. I asked if he had upgraded the modem drivers on his 2 year old computer. He then spouted off all of his letters(MCSE, A+, CCNE, BS and such.) and said he had been in computers for 30 years and had never heard of such a thing.

hey... sometimes I FEEL like that stupid tech. It could have been a bad day or a brain fart. We've been so overloaded that the only time I remember what my own damn name is is when I first answer the call with "Thank you for calling @Home TierII technical support; my name is Nik. How can I help you today?"
