I hate shaving :(

Everytime i shave, i get a bad rash on the lower part of my Neck...always right in that area, never anywhere else on my face. I just shave normally...have tried just about everything, electric shavers, razor blades, tried tons of different kind of shaving gels and aftershave lotions, and pre-shave lotions. It all started about 5 months ago, before that i would shave and not ever get much of a rash, not sure why it's different now. Then about 6 weeks ago, i shaved using a new razor blade...one of those Mach 3 vibrating ones, and it gave me a worse rash then usual, which turned into a bad infection called Impetigo, which is crusty, oozy, and nasty to say the least. it also ended up spreading to my forehead. Went and saw the doctor, he gave me antibiotics, which didn't work, then he gave me some more antibiotics the next week, which also didn't work, then went back, and he gave me some more antibiotics, and said if i didn't want to try those again, he could get me an appointment with my dermatologist. So i went to the dermatologist, who then gave me a shot of something, and some really strong antibiotics, which knocked out the Impetigo.

So at least the impetigo is gone now. I wasn't able to shave all that time either, which was kind of annoying. The whole thing was very depressing. So i finally got to shave last Thursday, and here i am with another bad rash, which also itches. It didn't show up for 2 days after i shaved, it usually takes about 8-10 hours to show up. Along with trying tons of different shaving products, i've also tried lots of different medical treatment, none of which has worked to well. Ayeayeaye! What ever will i do? Anyways, that's the story, not sure if anyone cares or not 😛, maybe someone has a top secret remedy I haven't tried yet? Well, i doubt it, but i hope so.

go with electric

I used to use blade and they worked nice, but I kept on getting ingrown hairs initially = bumps and rashes.
now that i use electric, I get no bumps and no rashes.
If the electric blades are too harsh on you, just use a lil bit of moisturizing lotion before you shave.

thats quite a horror story! You have real sensitive skin my friend. Do you have a dermotologist (sp). You may have to ask him what you can do about that. Try using a Sensor Excel 2 blade. Having less blades might be less irritating for your skin.

i have the same problem, though mine never gets infected.

its usually ingrown hairs in the same spot everytime i shave.

Try exfoliating before you shave, and go out and buy a moisturizer for before you shave too. Might also want to use an aftershave cream.

Those sometimes work for me, though i shaved today and i still go the rash in the lower left of my neck

After you shave & clean up, don't touch your face at all. Not to check if it's even, not to feel if there's stubble, not to scratch that irritating itch. It's that one spot on the underside of your jaw that sometimes rubs/sits atop your throat while sleeping on your back. Nothing to do but leave it alone.

I use a Norelco Quadra something, and Philips Philishave 20 like twice a day, since my hair grows in fast. (i get like 2 o'clock shadow 🙁 ) and i'm asian.

I read an article (mini-review) of the vibrating Mach3. The guy has sensitive skin and a thick beard. A rep from Gillette came to his office to give him a preview of the razor months before it was released. It cut the crap out of him and he broke out in a rash.

I have no idea what Gillette was thinking when they presented a vibrating razor to the market.

My skin is sensitive, but I'm half Asian so there's much less to worry about as far as facial hair. (I'd prefer that it not grow at all so I wouldn't have to deal with it.)

To add to your list of things to try:
1) I shave in the shower. Skin is wet and warm and clean, pores open and all that kind of stuff.
2) If you shave in upward strokes, shave down or vice-versa.

Good luck.

i haven't found an electric that won't give my neck a rash. blades are a little better for me. much smoother too. but damn, that's a rough story. what did you use before hand?

Have you tried a depilatory? I don't have the rash problem but a HUGE ingrown hairs problem. My chin and neck was very unsightly. There were times when I did not even want to interact with anyone. It was that bad. I too have spent a lot of money on products. The last one which gave me any relief was tend skin. Then it stopped working. So a depilatory was recommended for me. (magic shave cream) I was really scared to use it. It is apparently "designed" mainly for black folks so if you are non-black I dunno.

Anyways, I started using it about a week ago and absolutely no bumps. Not even a single one. It is just about $3 a tube. I got the regular improved version. I will recommend that you give it a shot. Nothing to lose. With the way you descibe your skin you must do the patch test first.

I get some major ingrown hairs under my chin when I shave closely down to the skin (I have an electric razor). I only shave that close if I'm going to something formal (last time I did that was Anand's wedding). It took almost a MONTH before all of the ingrown hairs/bumps completely went away. Funny thing is though, when I shave the sides of my face or around my mouth, I don't get ingrown hairs...just under my chin.

So usually, I just use the mustache trimmer to shave it down with just a "little bit" of hair poke through the skin so I don't have to deal with the ingrown hairs

Works well for me as well.

Just to add to the second point, you should shave in the direction of hair growth (i.e. along it) and don't believe Gilette's Mach 3 Turbo crap about shaving upwards.

We released the vibrating razor becuase it helps to lift the hairs and allows for closer shave. If you have really sensitive skin, you are almost SOL for shaving. Shaving with warm water and shaving during or after a warm/hot shower helps a bit for me personally since the hairs do get softer, and are easier to cut through.

WE??!! Is it really you (as a group) who's responsible for product? And you're still standing by that marketing crap?? Really??!!

If you have inside knowledge, I'd be interested in whether Gillette has decided to scrap this product yet.

BTW, love the Mach3...

Mach3+shower-shaving cream+up and down strokes=smooth shave-bumps-cuts-nasty ingrown things-infections

If I do the previous mathmatical equation my face is happy.

That's an ugly equation. you cant have multiple equal signs!

I hate electric razors...they raise hell with my face. I have always used rgular razor preferably ones with 2 or more blades and a pivoting head.

Matt's got a good tip for you. Or you could just grow a beard! I've had some problems with ingrown hairs and razor bumps, but I noticed fewer problems when I started shaving every day. My whiskers don't grow fast enough to warrant this, but it's been better for my skin I think.

Luck!

Agreed, but it works for me.

Oh, and you can to have multiple equal signs, I just did it, and you got the message. That's the biggest misconnection in languange, getting the intended message. You got it, so it was an effective communication. 😛

Also, a == b (different, but two =s)

I'll fix it just for you. 😉

guess people are interested afterall 😛

I don't like having a beard, it just makes me look like a bum. Though i hate having a rash too...it's a tough choice. The last time i shaved, i used the electric. Turns out I'm going back to the dermatologist later this week anyways, so hopefully I'll still have my rash by then so he can check it out, it'll probably be gone by then. Either way i guess i'll be happy, heh. Not sure what he could do though. Maybe he'll give me some kind of magic topical ointment i can use after i shave.

If you wash your face, try changing to a non-scented (or lightly scented), non antibacterial soap. Dermitologists will tell you that antibacterial bar soaps will kill good bacteria too, thus you can end up with rashes. The heavy scents can also irritate your skin....especially on your neck since the skin there is more sensitive.

Consider laser hair removal. Its not cheap, but in a few sessions they can permenantly remove the hair. Its not like you would ever grow hair for a beard there would you? I've considered it as i get irritation every time as well..

...I use a razor and water and...thats it. I don't think I've ever really broken out or gotten a rash. Guess I'm just weird.

And yeah I've bought into the whole Mach 3 thing...bought a Mach 3, two Mach 3 Turbos, and a Mach 3 Power. I have to say that the Turbo blades are the best.
