I hate PPPoE (or SBC DSL) *UPDATE* RASPPPoE saves the day

I just got SBC DSL and so far I'm pretty happy. Or was until I tried to set up a router. I got an old Dell Celeron 466 and set it up with Win2k and installed Enternet's PPPoE software, then set up ICS and hooked up my lappy to it. Everything is mostly working okay, except for a few key things like IRC and some websites. Ironically I couldn't connect to practicallynetworked.com to get info through my lappy, so I had to VNC to do it. :| Anyway, from what I got off their site it's a pain in the ass to get PPPoE and ICS to work together properly. The only only ONLY thing I really need working that isn't already is IRC, but I have no idea how to map ports, set up a socks5 proxy or any of that good stuff. Any help?

*UPDATE* I took the advice of JackMDS and got RASPPPoE. It sort of tricks ICS into working properly with PPPoE connections by pretending it's dialup as best I can tell. The bottom line is that my network is now happy. YAY!
 
The pain in the ass is not PPPoE, the pain in the ass is ICS. Get a cheap router if you want to share the connections. ICS will give you problems no matter what connection method you are using.
 
I can't afford a cheap router right now, and I'm also in an apartment with a "no drilling holes in the floor" policy, so I'm using a Power Line network adapter. I don't have $40 to blow on ethernet cable, or $10 for a cheap router to go with it.

P.S. Oh yeah, when I was using ICS on my dialup connection (hella ghetto) I had none of the problems I have now. It's not that there are problems, it's just that the number of problems has become too great.
 
Then you can play around until you might get it mostly working... about the best suggestion you can get. Get a router as soon as you can, you'll be glad you did.
 
Exactly, which is why I'm asking here HOW ONE SETS UP A PROXY SERVER FOR IRC. I don't need download capability, just chat
 
There are regularly deals on routers, I just picked up the D-Link DI-614+ from OfficeDepot for $15 after rebate. It's a wireless router, so there's no drilling holes in the floor. 😀
 
yukichigai, PPPoE is evil. Evil, evil, evil. If you must suffer with it, though, then I simply cannot urge you strongly enough to get a SOHO router and let it take care of many of the PPPoE headaches for you. Check Hot Deals - basic SOHO PAT routers are regularly being found for $10-$20 these days. If you can afford multiple PCs and power-line networking gear, you can afford a SOHO router. And trust us when we tell you that you will save far more than $10-$20 of your time and sanity.
 
We have no problems with PPPoE, and it's adventagous to get a router anyway simply for the hardware firewall. Our SBC DSL is far more reliable than our cable modem ever was! Our DSL never goes down. Right before we dropped cable modem, which got increasingly bad as time progressed, it was down about 50% of the time and the tech came out several times and said there was nothing they could do! Well, SBC seemed to be able to get a signal to us without a problem...

The only problem with that is that I could only afford the powerline networking gear a considerable time ago, and it was FAR anyway. (It's not USB 2.0 compatible so it was being phased out. Up to 5 FAR at Fry's a few months back) ATM I'm wondering how I'm going to pay for rent or if I'm going to pay for rent come next month. :/ All the equipment I'm using I've owned for a while. I'd also like to get this all sorted out since I stated in my roommate wanted ad that access to the DSL was included in part of the rent.

Anyway, I'm checking out RASPPPoE right now. If it delivers what it promises it should fix the problem.
 
Hey, just thought I'd let y'all know that RASPPPoE worked. I can connect to IRC and all that fun jazz now on my lappy, so I'm happy. Muchos Gracias ^_^
