Cliff notes: I hate Pep Boys. They are overpriced, have lousy incompetant service, and they just plain suck. The problem is, they are by far the closest auto parts store to my house. But every time I go there I vow never to go again. :|
Let me give you some examples...
Two weeks ago, I go battery shopping. Again I stop at Pep Boys since they are close. They have some random garbage brand 1 year batteries for like $75, or they have a single optima red top with a decent warranty for ** $160 **. I politely pass on that, then go buy the same battery from discount auto for $109.
Last week, I go in and stand there 10 minutes waiting for help. I ask if they have a code reader I can borrow. The woman gives me a complete blank stare. I say "I have a check engine light on and I want to see what it is" she goes "OHHH no you have to go ask them over there." So I go to the service desk line, and again wait patiently for 10 minutes. Most of this 10 minutes is the idiot clerk on the phone with an angry customer, who is relaying messages back and forth to some guy behind a desk, who refuses to pick up the phone. Finally I get to the front of the line, ask the guy and HE gives me a blank stare - tells me that they have one in the garage but he doesn't think I'm allowed to use it. I get pissed off, tell him off, and go to autozone, where they help me in minutes.
Tonight, I go in - admittedly at 8:59. I walk up to the service counter and apologize for running in so late, and explain that I just need one simple thing. The woman looks at me and goes "Was the front door open?" and then proceeds to yell at some other employee for not locking the door. I explain that I need a relay. She says what year, I say no, no, I need a relay but not for anything in particular - just a 5 pin relay. She says for what model car. Again I explain just a GENERIC relay, 5 pin, doesn't have to be anything special, and I ask if they have any out on the sales floor, maybe by the lights or something, she says no, "we keep all the relays in boxes back here." I say "ok, well, can I just look through and see if I can find what I need" and she gives me a look of disgust and goes "NO" like I asked if she could take off her shirt. So I say "fine, can YOU go back there and see if you can find what I need" (jesus christ was it that hard?) ... and she comes back with one after a bit, that was $19. I apologize for wasting her time, but there's just no way I'm paying $20 for a relay, and as she is going back and putting it back on the shelf, I wander over to the fog lights etc... where they sold a couple different relays for $4.59.
