so... you are Chinese, and a homeless guy tries to be nice and speak your native tongue to you?

wtf? give him a prize.

Say it back, or look at them real odd and start speaking spanish. It's probably a mix of them wanting to say hello, and them wanting to show off the fact that they know how to say hello if your language.

somehow i don't see it as being nice. and chinese is not my native tongue. i was born here in nyc, and speak english. what chinese i use to know has been mostly forgotten. and its not just homeless people...its everyone...just that today it happened to be a homeless person. if he wanted to be nice, he could have said hello/good morning in english, and i would have responded kindly.

its like he presumed i was some non-english speaking person and i hate that.

i always have the urge to turn to them and say "English motherfvcker do you speak it?!"

you are an ass. if you were born here, you should have been taught your native language by your parents when you were raised. atleast thats how i figured it would be.

every forein person i know that was born in the U.S. knows their native language, and the majority of my friends are foreign. and every time a new spanish person talks to my GF they will great her as "Hola, como estas?" the very first thing they say. since she is nicaraguan and looks hispanic, the other person figures she can speak spanish. obviously the person who talked to you feels more comfortable speaking to a person who (atleast looks like) comes from the same background in native tongue.

i think you are just mad that you dont' know your native language.

If I said it to you, it'd be because I was showing you that I actually give a shyt about your culture enough to direct a greeting at you in your native tongue.
A gesture of friendship and respect.
Every now and again one of the old timers around here will ask the nationality of my last name. When I tell them, they say "Oh, Naz Drovia" with a smile.
I think it means "Hello Friend". I have no idea how it's actually spelled.
Maybe just try saying hello when they're nice enough to greet you?
Then again, it may be some sort of bizarre evil plot because everyone is racially motivated to hate your guts. You may want to kill them very quickly.
I think I'd run with explanation number one. 😀

go ahead and say it, if it makes you feel better.

you look Chinese. don't hate on the fact people are going to think you were born there.

sorry, people can't tell by looking at you that you were born here.

if you were actually of some other ancestry than Chinese, this could be a valid rant but as it stands I don't think you have a case.

I think in this day and age, especially in new york fvckin city, its safe to assume that outside of the cultural enclaves that still exist(chinatown, korea town and so on) that the majority of nyers, asian, black, indian, whatever speak english.

i think its ignorant of people to assume that i don't speak english. When I was in the south, my sister once got complimented on how good her english was...wtf is that? of course its good, we were born and raised here...
