I hate people, especially those who avoid jury duty...

Grr, I'm so sick and tired of people complaining about jury duty and always weasling their way out of it. People seem to always make some bullshit excuse for not going to jury duty, sure it isn't a fun thing to do, but it is certainly the right thing to do. Because all of the educated avoid jury duty like the plague and always seem to manage avoiding it, we get the bottom of the barrel citizens who probably can't even count the digits on their hands and feet.

People bitch and moan about how stupid the people on juries are and how they're so easily manipulated, blah blah blah and then when they have to go up in front of a jury, they get ****** over because of a slimy, manipulative lawyer who has gotten the people to convict the defendant because the jury has a grudge against affluent persons.. Sure, I wouldn't want to get caught in a jury duty that lasted 6 months, but guess what, if lawyers weren't so easily convinced that they could manipulate the juries due to being so damned ignorant, I have a pretty good feeling that trials wouldn't be continuing for an inordinate amount of time. :|

fvck jury duty.... When I got called a few years ago, I spent the entire fvcking day sitting in a hard wooden chair just to be one of the three people not called into trial. There were hundreds there.

Worst part about it is I was missing work and I didn't get paid for the jury crap because i wasn't actually called into a trial.

I have never been called for jury duty.

But I think that juror should be a profession. I think juries would be a much more educated and aware lot if they were paid. They could get a training course on procedures and etc. to prepare them for their new profession.

I mentioned this to a judge friend of mine and he said that he wishes it was like that.

I have no problem with jury duty, but:

1) The courts should NOT be wasting the jurors time. Make a rule that you can't settle once selection begins.
2) You should be able to simply schedule when you will do it if the time is not convenient.

Goku, someday you will be old enough to be called for jury duty, and we'll see how you feel about it when YOU get called and have to take time off your McJob without pay to sit on one...

I like that idea, but, couldn't/isn't there be a reason why the jury system was setup the way it was?

I sympathize with some folks trying to get out of it. Some employers will fire folks for missing work, regardless of the reason. Other folks don't get paid while on jury duty and really can't afford to miss the wages. My employer will cover wages during jury duty but this is probably the exception.

I was called up for jury duty back in May and almost got picked for a 3-month capital murder case. *whew*

But the days I was off, my work paid me. :)

Ok, well I was under the impression that was illegal. If it isn't, then it SHOULD BE.

I'd love to do it, but I'm fairly certain I'd never get picked on anything major with as outspoken as I am (and as contrary to the establishment). The only times I've been asked to serve I truly haven't been able to go (once during my divorce and custody hearings, once during finals). If they ever contact me when I'm able to go I'll totally jump at the chance however.

I like how when anyone else starts a thread about jury duty people will become patriotic and preach on about doing your civic duties, but when goku does it, the sentiment is the complete opposite

I'm in agreement with Goku, I constantly hear people complain about bad decisions made in the courts. We all know the saying about voting "If you don't vote you can't b!tch" same applies to jury duty. If you don't do your civic duty and bail on jury duty you don't have the privilege to complain about how they mess up.

I think it would be interesting to be on a jury. I always get tossed out. This happens to many people in my profession, friends often fair the same. Except for one colleague, she became jury foreman and then hung the jury. The judge was not happy.

Of course they had to retry the case.
