Why can't they just make them .doc files? Much simpler in my opinion and I wouldn't have to download Acrobat. Ah well.

Because having a .doc file requires that you have Microshaft Word. With PDF, all you need is to download Acrobat, which can be had for free unlike Word.

Isn't there a "Microsoft Word Viewer" which is available for free?

You can embed viruses and stuff in macros in Word. Plus it won't always print the same. PDF is basically an image, it will print the same everywhere, and no possibility of virii

sorta, it is a MS Word 97 viewer, it hasn't been updated since 2001
MS is sorta trying to discourage its use, but it can still be found on the MS website

there are features and stuff that can be put into Office XP docs that the viewers (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) can't handle

i don't think MS has plans to update the viewers (again, check the dates, i don't think any of them have been updated since ~2001)

There's also Wordpad in Windows that supports the .doc format, although I'm sure it doesn't have much support for all the bells and whistles that Word has.

Seriously, pdfs are good. The documents appear exactly how the creator wanted them to look, the Acrobat Reader is free, and you get to use a hand icon that grabs the page. What more do you want?

Adobe Acrobat is a total POS. Maybe the editing software is nice, but the viewer is total crapware. It's slow, cumbersome, and you can never get the text to fit right.
