So I was driving down a fairly busy street last night, and it was raining and a bit foggy. I couldn't see the lines on the road, and to make matters worse, the street I was on had lanes swerving all over the place. So I decided, ok, I'll just follow the guy in front. Well, apparently they couldn't see a damn thing either because only when someone behind honked at me did I realize we were both driving halfway in between lanes. It's one of those things that doesn't seem like a huge deal at the moment, but the more I think about it the more possibilities of an accident pop up, and I wasn't even carrying my license at the moment. So anyway, I'm going to avoid night driving as much as I can from now on, especially in the rain. Anyone else find this happening, or are my eyes screwed up? Or do the headlights on my CR-V suck?

following someone in front of you is about the worth thing to do in bad weather.

Get a car with headlights and/or open your eyes. Road paint is very visible when illuminated at night - only slightly less so in the rain (unless it's some rediculous torrential downpour)

I love driving at night, and I really love driving in the fog. Go figure.

Why wouldn't you have your license with you if you're driving?

Follow the shoulder line on the right side of the road in a situation like that.

Get your eyes checked.

Night blindness is a real disorder. I had it and didn't even know it.

I never had problems seeing the lane markers in the rain until a few weeks ago. Driving home one night, pretty good rain, but not a downpour. Could just barely make out the markers. Now this is a fairly new road (deep black and real shiney when wet) so the contrast between the surface reflection and lane markers weren't great to start with, but this was really bad. I wondered if the state had changed paints to something that didn't show up as well.

Probably just the right mix of lack of moon, wet shiney surface and me driving a low to the ground car which added up to it though.

Do not buy those crappy Silverstars. If you want upgraded H4 bulbs that you can get locally, try the Phillips Xtravision (purple packages) that can be found at Autozone or Pep Boys. Cheaper than Silverstar and real upgraded lights, not rice boy. You may also want to look into getting a direct to battery wiring harness and relays for your headlights. It does make a noticeable difference.

If you really want to upgrade, try sourcing Osram Silverstars (Euro version), and the euro Phillips bulbs. Those are great. I have those on my CR-V and they are much brighter and usable. I did have to order them from England though. Daniel Stern Lighting has good info on bulbs.

I didn't say buy the Blue lights.........

I thought the blue ones were the rice lights?

I just put one silverstar on my pickup, and noticed a Big difference.

The extravision ones are good too.

I was night driving last night on the freeway with my dad, and he wouldn't let me go past 65. Rate of traffic was about 75. It's not that I give a fvck what the other people think about me, it's that I hate getting passed.

fog driving is the worst. I was once stuck on Route 80 in the middle of PA driving at 10 mph because visibility was less than 5'.

as far as night driving... the only thing I hate about it are people with high intensity headlights. they totally blind me at night.

My headlights have always sucked in the rain. Doesn't matter if run OEM bulbs, Cool Blues, Silverstars or my current fake HIDs. Fogs help a bit but not much. It seems like here in LA the lane markings really disappear in the rain. I've noticed its not as bad in San Fran and Oakland, etc.

NO! Silverstars are crap in the US market. They are tinted and do _not_ produce any extra lumens. They do, however, produce excessive glare, which the eyes mis-interpret as being "brighter" even though the glare actually reduces a person's ability to see.

Sylvania's "Xtra-Vision" bulbs are technically superior to the North American market "SilverStar" bulbs in every way. It's just that they can market BS claims about color temperature (which has precisely zero effect on ability to see) and fleece people for stupid amounts of money with the SilverStar bulbs.

I agree with what Zen stated. I hated the silverstars. For one thing I recall reading they use an over-driven filament. That means they crap out really quickly. For me it was a few months. In my opinion the best replacement bulb are Cool Blues. At any rate, hop on ebay and get the Euro spec Xtra-Visions before shelling out for silverstars.
