It's a UC college, so it's probably included with dorm fees. However, I do find it distressing that they hold a monopoly over internet access. You can't get cable, you can't get modem, I'm pretty sure you can't put a DirectPC reciever outside;), so that more or less leaves you with them.

How much does this service cost you?

it's included in dorm costs
roughly 1000 a month for half of a 11 x 12 room and a bathroom shared by 60 other guys and 10 crappy meals/week
:|

housing is cheap as hell off campus here too

Why are you in the dorms then?? :)

my parents are asstards that think just because i'm 15 i'm unable to do anything for myself and i'll get sodomized while walking to my apartment

Edit: THE ONLY REASON I AGREED TO LIVE IN THE DORMS IS FOR THIS DAMN INTERNET CONNECTION :|

look into utilizing the campus wireless system. As far as berkeley goes, like i mentioned, the shared t3's suck arse, but the wireless t1 is suppose to be much faster cuz not that many people use it. I know how to get it running on laptop pci wireless ethernet card, but not sure about how it works on a desptop

I tried the connection at Ohio state, 6 MB/s downloading from a public server, 8.5 MB/s uploading to a 100mbit connection.

Too bad I don't live on campus :(

/me pets his cable modem. After a year of GA Tech's god awful internet speeds, I am happy to have broadband back, even if I have to pay $45 a month.

whao, I thought mine was bad, I am stuck with 28.8k dialup (it is complimentary from our school, but I could pay for 56k from outside ISP) but there are no DSL or Cable available.

whao, another ATer in SoCal. but dc, I thought you graduated already?

Sucks to be you, when i dormed, I downloaded and uploaded like a madman. Here's a suggestion, at the end of the year, move out and get DSL or whatever.

Another note: you should have figured this out BEFORE you signed in and moved it (and I know high speed connection is at least 95% of every student's deciding factor in why one would move in to a dorm.)

IMHO dorms was a complete and total waste of time (school wise) but met and did a lot of interesting things in between.

sorry you quoted me before I did my edit, I said when i was there, i meant to say when I dormed, i never went to your school.

anyways, my point is that during the last 1-2 years mostly all colleges have done this (to some extent) so you're not the only one flaming down.

Ahh SOCKS proxies are fun. Soo many things can be done through them, most of the time without any logs of who did what.... <eg>

Lets hope you get caught and they decide not to press charges or anything. Lets hope they just charge you for the extra wasted bandwidth ;)

This seems to be the latest trend at colleges. Most colleges now limit bandwith, block ports, or limit daily transfer amounts. All it does is encourage students to get apartments off campus where they have room and unrestricted internet access via their own dsl or cable modem connection.

And potentially cuts down on idiot users casuing *more* security problems, students not being able to do *gasp* research, and the ever increasing bandwidth bill.

it's near impossible to do any studying in the dorms ... at least where i lived. if you wanted to study you did it on campus. most people used in-room to play counterstrike and AIM. also, freshmen aren't called to do that much research, since they take mostly intro classes.

what's college without a little fun? =)
