I have came to the point were I can barely drag myself to work and am in the market for another job. I recently found an opportunity to volunteer at a local establishment tutoring school-aged children. I think this will be a great experience for me but will it be worth it. How does a volunteer position affect your marketability in the job market? Do alot of volunteer jobs led to full time employment doing the same thing?

i handed in my resignation today. i quit from my it position because i wasnt being challenged. i need to move on, and no i dont have a job lined up just yet. i would like to concentrate on school now, but i will miss the paycheck. i think what i will do is volunteer my time to do some web designing. it really depends. but the thing you will get out of it is the thought of helping those who needs you. i had to do community service in HS, and i didnt like it one bit when i first learned of it. i volunteered at my local elementary school, and it was a great feeling. the look on those kids' eyes!!

Unfortunately, lilcam, "feeling great" doesn't pay bills.

Get another job and do the volunteering on the side if you can't afford it. That's my opinion.

I have gone to school in pursuit of a teaching degree but quit when the position I am at now became available. It is an OK job but the stress level is through the roof and I need to get away from it. The volunteer position will allow me to get a better handle on what I would expect had I finished school and went on to teach. I am hoping that it will give me some incentive to go back and finish up. I was just interesting in hearing about the experiences, both good and bad, that others have had is similar situations to have a better idea as to where to set my expectations for the job. Thanks for everyone?s input.
