I hate my job! Should I stick with it or look for a new job!?!

Ok, so I've been working for the same company (Lockheed Martin) for the past 2.5 years since I graduated from college. The job has been pretty good, not much to complain about ... but we're a government contractor, and recently the gov't asked us to take on a lot of work. Our management is too chicken to say "No" to the gov't, so they agreed to take on tons of extra work. More work than we have resources for, and our program is also downsizing because its coming towards end of life. So we're looking at an increasing amount of work with a dwindling workforce.

It hasn't been too bad for the past few months, we've been working some OT and stuff but it hasn't been too awful. But my team had 6 people in it and we keep picking up more work without adding warm bodies. And A week ago, my manager let one person in our team switch to another team. So we have 5 people. And then my team lead decided he had enough and accepted a new job today. So that leaves 4 of us to do 6 people's job and then some. Let me also mention that my team lead is one of those all-star workers that knows everything and probably does about 2-3 person's work.

Now, if I left as well it would put them in a pretty sucky situation ... 3 people to now do 6+ people's work. But in addition to all this fallout, I was assigned all of this extra work (and in my opinion BS paper pushing stuff). So I'm drowning in work, with more to come ... Probably a lot since I have the most experience after my team lead leaves and I'll be looked upon to take over his position or take a lot of his technical work.

So my question is, if you were in that situation ... would you leave them high and dry to probably make more money with less stress? Or would you stick it out and work your ass off and hope that you get some recognition for it? I also should add that dropping warm bodies into the group isn't easy because it requires a clearance and about 6 months of training before you really become somewhat useful (its a huge learning curve to catch on). Also I shouldn't have too hard of a time finding a job in this area (Northern Virginia), possibly within Lockheed Martin, because of my clearance.

I'd really love to stay in my position if at all possible ... I don't want to leave my team high and dry, but I find myself being more and more stressed with an impossible amount of work to do and less and less help.

you should stay and suffer because even when you know you should leave and everyone here will tell you to leave you'll just sit their and take it and get pissed on so why bother even thinking about it. just sit back and enjoy the golden shower

If you can get another job than take it. Just don't leave before you have another job lined up.

Also, have you been asking management for more staff? Either way, I don't think you should just passively stick it out.

And I kinda doubt that that LM is too chicken to refuse more work so much as they are willing to take as much work as possible because it means more $$$.

Yeah I wouldn't go anywhere without another job lined up first 🙂 ...

I haven't been personally asking for more people because I'm not team lead ... However, I totally plan on going into my manager's office tomorrow now that I know we're losing another person and asking for more resources.

Well see taking on more work is fine and dandy. Taking on work that some other company decided they couldn't do and finishing it at the same time as all the other work you had originally planned on doing with the same amount of resources is bad management 🙂 ... Its more money with the same amount of resources, which is great for profits but bad when you can't finish it on time and then you look like an ass to the gov't because you can't finish on time.

You have a good job, he happy you greedy pig bastard.

Sampson,

If you'd like to have my job, then you can take it! I doubt you'd be saying the same thing in my situation. Poor resource management makes for an unhappy workplace and unhappy workers. Its not like I'm considering leaving because I have work to do ... Its the overabundance of work with poor management ...

Oh I should also add that after the program asked us to "volunteer" to work 50-60 hours a week (it was more like a mandatory 50-60) and put in mandatory Saturdays for 3 months (September-December) and our team did it without question ... Our manager had a meeting with us in December after the 50-60 hour weeks were over and we started taking it easy ... and he told us he thought that we weren't doing our jobs and that we needed to shape up. Which is complete BS because we haven't slipped any milestone dates, and we had just spent 3 months working our butts off! The end of December (holiday time) is when we started taking it easy ... Thats the one that annoys me because I don't think our manager knows what it is we do, and he started making assumptions.

Well if you had a job offer for more money with less responsibility or at least less stress ... wouldn't you take it? 🙂

Well that gets a "duh". But do ya? If so, go for it. If not, see Ameesh's response. 😛

if u guys are hiring at Lockheed, send me a PM! I would love to take some load off from you guys!~!

College grad with one year experience.. looking for a job..

I don't have another job offer, but I don't think I'd have a problem finding another job (read above). In this area with a clearance, jobs are pretty easy to find. And there's nothing preventing me from switching to another program within Lockheed Martin if I wanted to.

man I would kill to work for LM, but my grades are too low 🙁 ohh well, you really need to talk to management. and working your ass off, is pretty much the norm with most jobs. I pulled a couple of 70+ weeks as an intern.

Don't listen to these quitters... if a prospective employer calls up your managers and finds out that you left them HIGH and DRY (like the Radiohead song) then I wouldn't hire you. I'd say, 'GET THE FSCK OUT!, you QUITTER!'
