i dont have msn messenger turned on. i am not logged through passport. im not in hotmail. there is nothing related to msn running in my taskbar. msn messenger has been taken out of the startup list and there is no trace of any other prog that is related to msn messenger in task manager.

yet people IM me. just the IM box comes up. apparently it shows me as being away. for the time being ive had to uninstall messneger. but i cant install and uninstall every time.
is this a new feature(if you can call it that) of msn or is something in my system F-ed up.
any help you guys can provide will be much appreciated :)

Check to see if windows messenger is running or set to run on startup. MSN and windows messenger both work through .net.

i just rename the folder so windows won't find anything about it to run.

Messenger is turned ON by default in Outlook Express. You need to toggle it off there.

yes, it is an annoying program. That I wish microsoft would wake up to.
Its even more annoying when you have msn software. you have to either turn it off every time or not use thier default browser.

its easy to just disable if you're not using it.

just rename the program folder in your c: drive. i name it "MessengerDisabled". done and done. if you ever want to use it, just remove the "Disabled"

i never see or hear from it.

I'm sure that works, but it in no way should be necessary. Something's obviously toggled on. Should be easy to determine where.

oh yeah, something definitely toggles it. i think you're right being outlook at least as you can't exit messenger if outlook is open. for that matter i think ie is the same.

at any rate, i hate the damn thing. just seeing that icon in the tray aggravates me :p

depending on what ver of windows, on an old xp copy i used to use i would do that and it would reinstall itself.... that is one of the reasons i use 2000...

We (my brother and I) had the same problem on our old P3. I'd be on my computer and send him a link out of the blue, and then he came out of his room and told me he was asleep and heard MSN's sound and the window was there... it wasn't in taskbar though, there was just the chat window... was very weird. I'm not sure, I think the problem didn't leave until he formatted.

Someone suggested options in outlook express. My brother used that software too, so it might be worth looking into.
