Ok, get this.... i'm working on my english paper (in proper MLA form of course). I opened an old humanities paper to use as a template. i modify said humanites paper until i'm done with the whole thing, works cited page and all. I go to close one of the CNN links, but i accidentally hit the x in word. does it prompt me to save? NOPE. it just closes the damn window. YAY. I lose god knows how many hours of work, and my paper is due in......*checks watch* 30 minutes.

BTW i already checked the autorecover files. the newest stuff in there is from june.

StarOffice/OpenOffice is your friend :)

Often when SO crashes, it even asks you whether you want to save any unsaved work before the application closes. Nice eh?

Doesn't Word ask every 10 minutes or so if ytou want to save your work? Or did you turn that off?

They made auto-save for stuff like that.

And of course ANY computer user knows this....
BACKUP... BACKUP! BACKUP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No excuses.

Shouldn't you hate yourself for being the one that closes the program?

Yep. You should be automatically saving yourself anyway. Basically you're complaining cause you screwed up and Microsoft didn't deal with it.

Well, folks...

You know all that annoying "idiot proofing" stuff included in programs and other areas of life that seem so stupid, you wonder WHO this crap was made for?

We have our answer now ;)

I've never heard of Word closing an unsaved document without prompting you to save...something's not right here.

Well you only lost 30 minutes. 30 minutes to learn a good lesson about saving stuff yourself frequently seems good to me!

You might want to try to make it a habit of saving everytime to pause to think about the next sentence to write. Out of habit, I automatically press CTRL-S as I'm pausing to think or ending a sentence. I've been burned by losing power in the middle of writing a document and the computer crashing while in the middle of writing a document, so I always make it a habit to save and save often!

Did you try looking for the file with part of the name and a wildcard to see if it was saved someplace else? (if you think it's possible it was saved under another name.)

Sorry dude, don't know what to do say... user error. You should have saved... just like last year when I lost my partition table. I should have backed up my stuff, but I didn't... My fault.

1) Search for *.doc over your entire computer.
2) Look in your temporary directory. Word often saves a 3rd copy there (in addition to your normal file and your backup).
3) Good luck explaining this to your teacher/professor.
