I hate megapixel whores

So this lady in the office is looking for a P&S digicam and looking to spend $150 and I was just giving her some knowledge when this other clown walks over and says "You're wasting your time looking at those cameras because anything less than 6 megapixels is a waste." I just ignored him and walked away. There's no point arguing with idiots.

I agree. My Canon is only about 3 megapixel and it takes gorgeous pictures. Megapixels sells cameras, though - just like gigahertz sells computers. Everyone wants to attach an easy number to things.

Many years ago as a teenager working at an electronics store I realized how pointless it was to try and argue with uninformed idiots. It is a total waste of my time. If someone asks my opinion, I'll give it to them...I'm not going to argue with someone cause they are an idiot/ignorant.

Something I learned long ago is that most people will be perfectly happy with their electronics choices even if they made the "wrong" choice.

If people ask for my input I'll give it to them (tailored to how much I think they want), the only people who's choice I really get involved in are family. I'm recognized as the family expert on all things that plug in, & they will listen to me. Outside of my family I keep my mouth shut.

Yep. Its part of the "everyone wants to have the best" culture we have. Nevermind the fact most people would be content with way less. The trouble is, most people are usually to ignorant about the things they buy to know what the best actually is. So when marketing offers them an oversimplified way to determine that they have the best, and easily brag about it they glom onto it without question.

Of course, anyone with deductive reasoning abilities knows marketing exists to lie to you and therefore there statements are irrelevant.

same here, except even *they* sometimes still don't listen to me.

People are also more happy when they spend slightly more for something than they should have. They somehow believe that when they pay more money they're always getting better quality. This only applies about 20-30% of the time. Usually it's not a function of manufacturers, but market demand or retailers keystoning everything in their stores.

That's pretty silly too. Why not just reduce the size post-processing?

Maybe he doesn't want to buy a bigger memory card and has no plans to print higher than 8x10?

i agree. i just got a 5MP canon. i will take full size pics and then for the ones i want to email or upload resize them.

on the other hand theres a lower limit. not being able to crop sucks, not having much detail also sucks, and its not likely a 3mp sensor camera is going to be slr quality type sensor stuff, more like obsolete old product with lousy small sensor

" OOOOHH!!! Look a 9 megapisel camera with 100x digital zoom and it only takes 1 battery! Must buy!!"
