I hate Maxtor.

But... how do you really feel???

I feel like taking a big piss into my computer due to having to fight to get the OS to boot cause this Maxtor RMA drive I got is also bad.

Stop using Maxtor.

My recommendation is Seagate (owned 5 Seagate drives for 3-4 years and have had no problems). They might not be the tip top in performance (though they are up there), but they are quiet and reliable from my experience.

Also I do not recommend Western Digital, they suck. Have had a WD drive die on me that I RMA'd and got back another bad drive which I RMA'd and got another bad drive.

I used to hate maxtor back in "pre 20gig days" days, but gave them another shot a couple years ago and so for so good. Of the 80 Dells we just bought at work 6 months ago, we've only had 2 of the die (of course it's only been 6 months).

I buy WD for home use whenever possible, but I think my 300gb one is a maxtor.

Same here. I had been using WD drives for the longest time before that - still have one as a secondary... have about a 90% success rate with those too.

My only complaint about Maxtors is that disk activity is louder than WDs. Maybe because of its higher speed/size... not sure since I don't have newer WDs.

Out of 260 IBM pcs we have at work which all have maxtor drives, 180 of them have died due to HDD failure. IBM finally came out and replaced every drive we had in those machines. Maxtor apparently has an entire batch of drives which are bad.

In my home experience, most rma drives are refurbs and have a high failure rate no matter who you contact. Though when my 1 raptor died WD sent me a brand new drive.
