I hate magnetic "support our troops" ribbons.

Of course you should support our troops!! They should never have to go though that BS they went though after veitnam, being ridiculed, spat on, etc.... they do a hard job, follow orders and give up much time and maybe life.

But a simple hand shake, a knowing nod of thanks... those things seem like they carry all the more weight. Hangin' a frickin' ribbon? Come on.

Right on bro! If people are so eager to show their support for the troops they should do something tangible like send some care packages over to them or something. Or even thank or shake a vet's hand. At least show respect to veterans.

IMO, these magnetic ribbons are the same as those dumbass "Oakley: Thermonuclear Protection" stickers that were appearing on teenagers cars in the early 90s and the "No Fear" stickers of the late 90s. They only serve two purposes.
1. As a passive way for people to feel included and hip.
2. To make Chinese businessmen who own the factories that are churning them out rich.

The majority of people who put these magnets on thier cars have no idea why our brave troops are sacrificing precious time out of their lives and in some cases even *dieing overseas or even care. These are the same people who rushed out to put American flags all over their cars after 9/11, only to let them wear off and decay. Funny how once the "fashion-bug" wore off the flags all disappeared.

In two years they'll move on to the next fashionable thing and forget about the ribbons too.

The sad thing is that most of the "Support Our Troops" ribbons that they sell at Walmart or whatnot are made in China and not a penny of the profits from them are going to support the troops. And yet... the dumb rednecks keep buying them in bunches. How sad.

As a member of the US Army Reserve currently serving in Kuwait, I happen to appreciate the show of gratitude and support that the ribbons you seem so against are intended to convey.

It made me feel good to know that my mother and wife both purchased one for their vehicles, and you may like to know that they were "Made in America" and purchased from a "Mom and Pop Shop", not the evil known as Wal-Mart.

Different people have different ways of expressing their support for us (those that support us, of course). Just because some choose magnetic ribbons on their cars over alternate means does not make those people less, or more, patriotic or American. I don't believe they deserve the scorn you seem to have for them.

Finally, I'm also from Texas, as are my mother and wife. I'm not sure, but it sounds like because they're from the South and purchased the aforementioned ribbons, they qualify as "dumb rednecks". That you have resorted to such generalization and name-calling over something like this is a sad commentary on you personally and conveys to me a serious lack of respect for your fellow wo/man. You are entitled to disagree, but you should not stereotype, name-call, or otherwise put down those with whom you disagree.

Then again, my job is to put my life on the line to ensure that you have the right to act that way. Sometimes I wonder why I signed that dotted line......

:disgust:

EDIT: I wish I'd read all of the other posts before responding to "ultimatebob". Apparently, he isn't the only one here who has a huge issue with other people behaving in a way different than he does, or than he thinks they should. Sorry to single you out like that, bob.

Who is this they? They certainly aren't the majority of Iraqis. Those Iraqis voted. The people who are fighting us are the remnents of Saddam's regime who are fighting to create another dictatorship. They are fighting against freedom.
"Your" and "my" version of freedom...not theirs. That's what I meant by put yourself in their shoes. They've been in power for a very long time and don't want to relinquish it.

Pick up some books from Tariq Ali to see what I mean.

Oh yeah, they prefer the kind of freedom where people who have an opposing view disappear in the middle of the night and end up buried in a sand dune somewhere.

its....a.....magnet.....sticker.......

is it really worth the hate? id be more concerned with why something so harmless, that has no direct influence on me, would piss me off. i can understand what it may symbolise to you, and in many cases you are probably right, but that symbolism doesnt apply to everyone that wants to slap one on their car.

there are more productive, and less stressful, things to invest that energy into. let it go....let it go....

Jesus H. Christ people...where did I ever say I supported their version of freedom? All I'm saying is put yourself in their shoes and you'll understand *why* they are fighting the way they are. Again, point out where I support the resistance.

Go ahead.

i saw someone with a "god bless america" magnetic ribbon thing, but they whited it out to say "godless america". hahaha i'm guessing they probably stole it to begin with.

Ok, combine your post with the link in your sig line and see if you can figure out why we have the feeling you support the resistance.

Go ahead yourself, I'm sure you're more than likely smart enough...

Oh I've read your posts and you've done a pretty good job of sending a mixed message. On one hand you say that you don't support the resistance, but on the other you say that the US is oppressive. Sorry, it just smells like the same old rhetoric from the left.

I guess that is the most comfortable place to be right now for a liberal. This way you're covered no matter which way it falls.

Never support a philosophy encourages weakness.

Where did I say the US is oppressive. Sure, our policies are aggressive but, again, I've said all along in this thread to put your mind inside the mind of a member of the resistance. Try to think like they would think.

See the difference?

Damn, you people are dense.

Nice tap dance, now run along...

I have a USAF insignia on the turbovan's rear window. I'll bet NOBODY knows WTF it is when they're sitting behind me at a light, too.

Nice of you to at least admit you have no reading comprehension.
