Was riffing on this subject today with some relatives. In one sense the ribbon is a nice, quaint, show of support. But how? By putting a magnetic ribbon on the back of your car? What a shallow (though completely "American") thing to do. Pair a ribbon with a confederate flag and you're lookin' at home-baked goodness. Do people in some circles get looked down upon if they don't have a ribbon? The Johnsons have 4 ribbons, does that somehow make them more American? About all I feel we're supporting are the ribbon makers.
It had me thinking back to the country songs by Toby Keith and such. Those songs just made me cringe in embarassment. Ugh. I want to be proud to be an American, damnit.
That is all.
:disgust:
On a slight tangent, I can imagine that some troops coming back from the war zones could see the ribbons and nod, knowing that people "support" them, but... wha?
