Ugh, this is getting ridiculous. I went from 98SE to WinXP Pro on my work machine. I put on Notes R.5 and take my id file and the other names file. Opens up fine but can't find the server. Mind you XP networking is configured exactly the same as 98. And, of course, it still works in 98. Man, this "upgrade" is turning into a pain in my ass. At least I finally figured out why my network connection kept dying.....

We use Notes at work. Upgrading versions has never been a problem and it sure as hell is more secure than any MS offering. Only downside is speed, as far as I can see. Migrating to Notes from something else... well good luck with migrating anything in the tech world.

EVERYONE hates Lotus Notes. Whatever idiot in Washington decided that we are REQUIRED to use it isw... well... an idiot.
I did hear the other day from someone relatively high up here, though, that we might be moving away from it to outlook in the near future. :)

Ever see an APAR for Notes? Exchange/Outlook ain't doing so hot. Gov't setting... security is job 1. BTW, don't get me wrong, I've said to myself on many occasions how Notes sucks... but it's understandable why we're forced to use it.

Yea, lotus notes sucks completely.
My biggest (but not only) gripe is that I can't use any other e-mail client to use e-mail, which means I have to keep W2K running via VMWare on my linux workstation.

And their database groupware thing is a real PITA. Maybe our company is just a bunch of idiots in this department, but its impossible to find anything unless you know where it is. The web won. Get over it.

At least in Outlook you can do simple things like shift+click to select multiple messages, and the scroll wheel works.

And the proportional slider bar ... I know it's a nit, but would it be so damn difficult to have a proportional slider bar.

You guys are aware there's much more to Notes than just simple Mail right ? What else do you guys use it for ? Scrolling and shift-clicking work for me... (R6).

Or a slider bar that had more positions than top, dead middle, bottom.

But at least they have that pretty login dialog. Good thing they're putting focus on the features that are important to the users.

So you upgraded your client but didn't update your mail template?

Check your connection document for the server.

What version are you using? My dbs (Mail or otherwise) don't have this slider problem at all.

Yup, and it's all a complete PITA. Nobody uses it if they have any choice in the matter.

All we use it for is mail, and we're using R5. Some idiot in Reston will probably conclude his testing of R6 right around the time R7 comes out, and then they'll upgrade us. Wouldn't want to have us using unstable software, better test it for 2 or 3 years first.

Heck if I remember; it was three or four years ago when I worked at a company that used Notes. I want to say it was version 4.5 or 5. I was pretty amazed that a non-first generation version of such an expensive tool didn't adhere to basic interface guidelines.

w00t! :D

Only thing I'll need Notes for anymore is a few of the corporate databases which is fine, I just hate the mail portion of Notes.

Testing is an actual job for all bigger companies. You can imagine how $#!T hits the fan when an R6-designed database (using Designer) for a customer doesn't work with an R5 server. That's one of the reasons why we're not supposed to be on R6 yet, but I'm a glutton for punishment. Most companies hold off for a long time.

I had notes R.5 running in 98 and put the same version on XP.

DOH!

gotcha. check your connection document. maybe you have some kind of DNS problem. check location documents as well.

Been a long time since I did notes admin.

For all those that are complaining about notes - apparently you don't know how to use it. :) It runs our global corporation of 10000 users from customer service workflow apps, to report distribution, process mapping, sales force automation, etc.

I've now worked for two different companies that use notes. At both places, it was/is almost universally despised by the end-users, but held in high reverence by the upper levels of the IT staff (low level IT staff tended to dislike it). And when anybody complains, the standard response is "you don't know how to use it".

Well then maybe they need to do something about the usability of it. Cuz I've used it for about 2 years now, and its still a pain in the ass. I consider myself pretty computer savvy ... application learning curves don't tend to bother me. But this program is just a misery to use. Maybe its a joy to admin.

Latest example ... a new guy here wanted to attach a document to an email.
First, by default, there is no toolbar button to attach a document ... you have to go into the file menu. There is a way to put a button on your tool bar ... somebody showed me how to put it on mine a year ago, but I'll be damned if I can figure out how to do it again.

Now, this guy was damn near screaming at his computer cuz everytime he tries to attach something he gets an error message.
What's the problem? He has the cursor in the wrong field (title instead of body). Why cant' this thing be intelligent enough to figure out where to put the attachment?

I don't like it either, very unconventional interface and slooooooooooowww - 'course it's running on a 950 celeron w/192MB and Win2k, so that could be a factor too.

Lotus sucks the big one. I have no idea why the interface is the way it is. It is completely counter-intuitive. I hate it.

Heh, you think that's slow. I've got a P2-333 w/ 384 ram running XP Pro.
